Muslims,is Abortion Permitted In Islam?help Pls. by ade101(m): 5:23pm On Aug 26, 2010
I just screwed myself. To be honest abortion is d only choice i could think of.The alternative which is keeping it, is like watchn my life ruined. We are both young and i just got admitted into unilorin & i knw for sure that its going to be the end of my education as i have been told.Abortion is the last thing i wil ever done in my life but im short of choices.I am a muslim & was born and raised in islam.Acording 2 Allah,he who kill/save a soul is equivalent to killing/saving all soul. But,i need info concerning if abortion is killing a soul? Under what condition is it permitted?I have done a little research & i discovered that, according to some islamic scholar, its permitted provided that its not more than 120 days.It was proved using an ahdith of prophet muhammed(s.a.w),which described stages of embryonic development. It described how Allah creates/develops a baby in the womb. And the prophet says that it is not alife until after 120 days when Allah breath soul into it.So,acording to the scholar,if after 120 days d abortion is carried, then that is killing a soul.Im only readn to justify my action thats why i need ur help so that i can understand the gravity of what im about to go into. But beleive me,any choice of keepn it means a lot of trouble or u-turn has begun in my life. You can save the insults, because no one understand how foolish, stupid & irresponsible i am than myself. So,just help me on how sinful or sinless this act could be, thanks.

Abortion in your own case is illegal and to the best of my knowledge, it is not allowed in Islam

Imam al-Ghazzali makes a clear distinction between contraception and abortion, saying that contraception is not

like abortion. Abortion is a crime against an existing being. It follows from this that there are stages of existence.

The first stages of existence are the settling of the semen in the womb and its mixing with the secretions of the

woman. Then come the next gestational stage. Disturbing the pregnancy at this stage is a crime. When it develops

further and becomes a lump, aborting it is a greater crime. When it acquires a soul and its creation is completed,

the crime becomes more grievous. The crime reaches a maximum seriousness when it is committed after it (the

fetus) is separated (from the mother) alive.”

However, there is one exceptional situation. If, say the jurists, after the baby is completely formed, it is reliably

shown that the continuation of the pregnancy would necessarily result in the death of the mother, then, in

accordance with the general principle of the Shari`ah, that of choosing the lesser of two evils, abortion must be

performed. The reason for this is that the mother is the origin of the fetus; moreover, her life is well-established,

with duties and responsibilities, and she is also a pillar of the family. It would not be possible to sacrifice her life for

the life of a fetus which has not yet acquired a personality and which has no responsibilities or obligations to fulfill.

Islam's approach to the issue of birth control and abortion is very balanced. It allows women to

prevent pregnancy but forbids them to terminate it. In case of rape the woman should use the

morning after pill or RU486 immediately after the sexual assault in order to prevent the possible

implantation of a fertilized ovum. Modern technology (like ultra sound scan) has made it

possible to know whether or not a child has a defect long before he is born. Some people justify

the abortion of a defective fetus.

"And do not kill your children for fear of poverty: We give them sustenance and yourselves (too): surely to kill them is a great wrong." (17:31)

Please I will advise that you keep the baby,it doesn’t affect your education and make sure you inform the father of the baby.
