It depends what pampering means.
More detrimental to kids is violence, lack of love and parental guide.

That's an over-generalisation. Kids are to be loved and pampered. It makes them better mentally and psychologically as adults. I've always had the slogan 'spare the child and spoil the rod'. I got it from my father and it worked well for him because despite that belief, all of his children have grown up into fine men and women.

Striking a balance is the key word. You let your child know what is right and what is not and as kids, they are bound to deviate from the rules at times. What to do at this time is to lovingly correct them and let them know the consequences of such actions.

A child you bring up with love will hardly want to hurt you but children who grow up the hard way- cursing and flogging- usually end up been tough and non challant.
