Barcelona One Win Away From Making Another History by Newsblenda(m): 6:49am On Feb 28, 2019 |
Barcelona are now poised to make history after their convincing 3-0 win over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final. Ernesto Valverde's men have reached another final in the competition, their sixth in the last six years, having been victorious in four of them consecutively. They have no rival in the competition and are already Copa del Rey legends. With a win in the final, they could become the only team ever to win five consecutive Copa del Rey titles. They beat Athletic Club in 2015, Sevilla in 2016, Alaves in 2017 and Sevilla again last year. At present, they are tied on four-in-a-row with Real Madrid and Athletic, although those achievements were both a long time ago. Madrid accomplished the feat from 1905 until 1908, while the Basque outfit did so from 1930 until 1933. Much has changed with both the competition, teams and football itself since then. Barcelona are the reigning champions and will take their place alone in the history books with a win. The only time they've been knocked out in the past six years in the competition has come in finals, showing their incredible affinity with the tournament of late. Since 2009, the Catalan club have competed in nine finals. Only the ones in 2010 between Sevilla and Atletico and in 2013 between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid did not feature the Blaugrana. Valverde's side are the kings of the Copa del Rey. They have lifted the trophy 30 times and at the Benito Villamarin on 25 May, they hope to make it 31. Luis Suarez scored a pair of goals to help give Barcelona a 0-3 win over Real Madrid in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal on Wednesday night at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, sending the Catalonians to the Final with a 1-4 win on aggregate. It was one of those results that will leave onlookers shaking their heads. At no point during the first 45 minutes did a three-goal Barcelona win look plausible, but a combination of poor finishing from Los Blancos and opportunistic scoring from Barcelona led to the night's result. Perhaps the groundwork for this Barcelona win was laid last weekend when the Uruguayan broke his goal-less spell with an inconsequential stoppage time score in Sevilla. Whether that served as the trigger is debatable, but what is certain is that Suarez is back to his goal-scoring ways and that bodes well for Barcelona's final months of the season. Suarez will earn the headlines, but also credit must go to goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was flawless in net and kept the Barcelona net clean when Real were bombarding the area for the first hour. One of the most memorable images of Barcelona's 3-0 rout of Real Madrid was that of Sergio Ramos after the visitor's third goal in the Copa del Rey semi-final. Sergio Ramos After Suarez's Panenka penalty had taken Barcelona's tally up to three, the Madrid captain sent a defiant message out to his teammates. "Let's not let them score six," was the call from the defender that told his teammates to carry on until the final whistle. Los Blancos heeded that advise and prevented any further damage that could've been done to the scoreline.
