The Students’ Union President of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Comrade Abiodun Laurel has been suspended from office for 200 “working days”The media reported that Laurel was suspended for endorsing and campaigning for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde. The Vice President, Badiru Amidat is to now act as President.

LAUTECH is a state institution located in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and the school is jointly owned by the Oyo and Osun States government. Both the Oyo and Osun are APC-controlled states.

Those suspended are the union’s Secretary General and Public Relations Officer, Comrades Juwon and Adeyemi Emmanuel, respectively. While Juwon was suspended indefinitely, Emmanuel was suspended for 150 “working days.”

The PRO was suspended for sending a notification to the students to converge and support Engr. Makinde, an action that was considered “inappropriate” for an office holder by the Parliament.

In a statement signed by the Senate arm of the union those suspended were asked to handover every students union properties in their possession to the the “appropriate quarters.”

The Senate wondered why the union President, Laurel failed to inform management of his decision, “thereby putting the governing council and management to answer questions from different quarters like they are the one endorsing candidate of one political party against another.

They further argued that Laurel had earlier endorsed the candidate of AD, before re-endorsing the PDP candidate.

What if the AD candidate had mobilized thugs to the school to disrupt the rally of the PDP candidate that the SU President was taking round the halls of residence. What if riot ensued and students become victims of death or properties were damaged. What explanation has got the union President? What if the aspirant or the political party you endorsed doesn’t emerge, that means you have put the future of over 35,000 LAUTECH students to another crisis as the opposition party may not listen to us if we run into any problem. The school management warned against political rally and its involvement on campus. The SU President as the number one student has violated the rules and regulations and therefore stands suspended, because no political party or aspirant can enter the school and be rallying round without the management’s approval,” a statement by the Senate read.
Meanwhile, following the development, the management of LAUTECH has banned all form of political activity/rally on campus.
