Emulsions are two-phase system in which the dispersed phase is also a liquid. These coarse dispersions have the globule diameter in the range from about 0.1 to 100 mm. Emulsions are also called as heterogeneous system or more precisely biphasic systems.

Emulsions are defined as thermodynamically unstable system consisting of at least two miscible liquid phase, one of which is dispersed as globules in the other liquid phase.

Advantages Of Emulsions

1. To mask the unpleasant taste of drug:

Drugs having unpleasant taste are not acceptable orally. Such drugs can be incorporated in the dispersed phase (internal phase) so that the taste can be masked.

Examples: Laxatives, vitamin A etc.
