The Experience Called “failure” by smartinkblog: 8:54am On Mar 18, 2019
The experience called “failure” is such that is synonymous to everyone. Hardly would anyone ever boast not to have ever encountered a failure experience or a failed attempt. Even if no one ever wish to fail at doing a particular thing but accepting that you have failed when you did puts you on a better platform to learn from your experience thereby creating rooms for improvement. It would be small-minded and narrow in thought to assume that in our pursuit for excellency and greatness, failure will be totally nebulous, neither should we stigmatize our failure experience for in it lies great lessons that when properly comprehended can skyrocket us to our greatness.

Grass To Grace
Prior to Thomas Edison’s invention of the incandescent light bulb were host of other scientists which include Sir Humphry Davy (1801: platinum filament, 1809: carbon arc lamp), James Bowman Lindsay (1835: Incandescent light demonstration), Warren De la Rue (1840: vacuum tube enclosure), Frederick de Moleyns (1841: powdered charcoal filament), Joseph Wilson Swan (1873: Carbon fiber filament), and Woodward & Evans (1875: Gas filled “globe”). They all had one or more scientific contribution in one way or the other to the development of the Incandescent light bulb but the name “Thomas Edison” rings louder in the mind of many and easily found on the lips of most people when the invention of the light bulb is mention.

Don’t Give Up!
Thomas Edison wasn’t the best student at school. His teacher once referred to him as a student that is “too stupid to learn anything”. His case was so pathetic that his teacher had no interest in teaching him. He was already termed a complete failure. But Thomas Edison never gave up even when his experience of failure kept signaling on him to give up. Though he tried to be the best he could in his early age but luck was hardly on his side.

Learn Some Lessons From That Failed Attempt
Did Edison later grew up to become the best employee at work either? Not really! Edison was seen as a “non-productive” staff which landed him up to being fired from his first two jobs. By a layman analysis, Edison had every reason to have given up his dreams and chart a new course since his pursuit for excellence was continuously rewarded with failure. But he wouldn’t see failure as a distraction but a means to learn new ways to become better.

Let Excellency Be A Habit And Not A Temporal Act
While attempting to invent the incandescent light bulb, it was said that Edison had 1,000 failed attempts. When Edison was asked about how he felt to have failed 1,000 times, he replied “I didn’t fail 1,000 times”. He continued by saying, “the light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps”. We tend to approach perfection when we see those failure as mere steps to attaining our desired Excellency. It is worth knowing that it will be uneasy to lose track in pursuit of Excellency if we make Excellency a habit and not just a temporal act. When “Excellency” becomes a habit and a lifestyle, irrespective of the failure experience you may encounter in your pursuit, you’ll always see clear image of possibilities ahead of you . That image of possibilities is what keeps you going thereby serving as the energizing factor to attaining that desired Excellency.

We All Can Do The Impossible
Ben Carson almost lost his shine and would have equally wiped away his name in “the book of history” if he had yielded to the influence of this experience called failure. From his book titled gifted hands, even before admitting to operate on the little boy, Dr. Ben had concluded that it was a failed case, owing to the fact that to the ...
