You are obviously very ignorant about the efficiency of herbs.

Do you even know that plants contain all these active ingredients in all these (chemicals) drugs in their natural forms and also that close to 90% active ingredients in the drugs are synthetic and "copy copy" from the plants?
I swear education should be banned from Nigerians! Because it's purpose has been utterly defeated in this country...the difference between those western medicines and your agbo is in the utilisation of the active ingredient and it's dosage..they take years to isolate the active ingredient in a root or herb, then they determine the right amount of dosage of the isolated active ingredient..but in the case of your agbo, you swallow the herbs and roots completely..in many cases your body fails to assimilate the most vital ingredient(s) from the root or herbs or it assimilates more than the required dosage..and when that happens it puts more pressure on your liver and kidney in trying to expunge the excess material in your body...

I don't believe this.

They can say anything to discredit herbal medicine that has been a source of wellness for years.

If I may ask what exactly in the agbo causes kidney damage?

I took agbo iba as a child to combat malaria and nothing happened to me.

An average traditional Yoruba family drinks agbo like they drink coke.
If it were true there would be higher percentage of kidney failure among them ( plus their kids) than anywhere in naija
Even the vegetables we eat are all herbs they should have told us the numbers of vegetable stick we should cook so that we would not be taking overdose yeye people!

This people are trying to reduce African population with several chemicals used as drugs. I won't stop taking agbo till I die, because that's was what my parent took from birth even my forefather, ewe ategbo is the best.
If they believed agbo is responsible for many kidney problems in Africa, what of their synthetic drugs and the prevalence of cancer amongst the whites

So to you now "education" is when you sit in a class and somebody is there to teach you to pass one exam, abi? I know a lot of people who never had any western education but are more educated than all the lectures in your school out together. What is education?

My friend the use of herbal remedies has been in practice efficiently and effectively thousands of years before dem born the so called father of western medicine (which is even another lie). Read his history and learn who he learnt from.

It is refreshing that educated and well informed Africans in the same field as these foreign educated experts at home or from foreign schools, are catching up with the ways western and eastern world promote their drugs and expertise.

These are the same people that come to Africa, study the same Agbo and go back to patent aspirin, antibiotics and other drugs.

They were the same people against Palm oil until all of a sudden it became a miracle cure for atheroslerosis and other forms of diseases causing heat attract or stroke.

The same scepticism about bitter leave until lately.

Word of caution though, our purification and dosages are still poor. But the children of Babalawo in medical sciences as specialists or community health officers, nurses are doing well. Their problem is that they would not publish.

Your first paragraph reiterates why I believe education in Nigeria is a hoax, a bloody scam! Education is understanding the workings of your environment..you swallow roots and herbs without knowing how they work, education shows me how and why those roots work..education goes further to show me how best to maximize the effectiveness of the roots and herbs..go get some quality education!

Key words being "CAN".
I guess they missed that
1. Quinine was discovered from the Chinchinna tree
2. Azadirachtin was discovered from Azadirachta indica that is neem ( Dongoyaro) Both of these drugs have antimalarial properties and are often used in the treatment of malaria
And lets not forget the Asian Ginseng which has a whole lot of medicinal properties
Let them conduct a proper research with several control groups to verify their claims and let the OP also be aware that there are still intelligent folks on this forum and stop coming up with sensational topics like the above.

Question is what do they use in making the ago? Someone cannot bring a yellow liquid and tell me to start drinking. As far as I am concerned, it may be their urine!

Please show me where you read that life expectancy in the 70s was 40 years. I don't know where you got that information from. Maybe from the white man. My grandparents from both sides died in their 80s. My parents are in their late 70s, and still alive...my mom still takes strictly herbs...Ginger, Garlic, etc. And she is super healthy at 75. Her elder sister is 79, still healthy...Most of my aunts and uncles are still alive. I don't know know where you got your information. In fact, last week, my uncle was joking about one of his aunt's in her 90s that was still alive, and saying maybe she needs to take a ladder and climb to heaven since she doesn't want to die. Life expectancy 40 in the 70s? SMH.

Until you try to look beyond your aunts, uncles and parents, you won't get the true picture. As per where and how I got the information, I don't see the reason to disclose that since already you've made your conclusions known. How else can you and I determine a nation's life expectancy without the white man's formula?

Btw, my grandma died at 96; My grand dad at 90, but I wouldn't make hasty generalizations since I lost some other relatives at ages 58 and 60.

It's good to be wary of what one takes but I don't agree that consumption of AGBO is the Common Causes of people with Kidney Problem ,I had Infections for years ,I took Antibiotics after been diagnosed of bacteria Infection ,Don't say I went to Quacks Doctor I Patronised Specilaist .The doctor keeps telling me Grammar ,I followed His Medical Advice carefully ,He Prescribed First Gentamycin ,it does not work ,Later he Prescribed Zinnat . Symptoms persisted ,I decided to go to General Hospital as a Friend advised me he told me I would have more Experienced Doctor there ,I was told to go for another medical test of which I said I have done ,I repeated the test after which Rocepphine was Prescribed ,I had a slight relief but after just 4 days my symptoms was back ,I have Boils,Body itching and akin rashes ,My sexual life was really bad ,I felt weakness and pains often ,I got myself treated of malaria and typhoid no changes ,The fear of AGBO discourages me because of this same story I hear that it affects the Kidney ,When Boils was embarasing me ,I came online to search for Solution ,the same Agbo that is been condemned is what gave me solutions from Infections and I am very fit today ,infact I got the Herbal solution on this site Nairaland and have joined since then .To sure my kidney is fine as a result of what I hear before ,I went for Medical Check up which says I am very okay ,my two Kidneys are working great ,I also have my Creatinine Level Checked .AGBO gets Level Jare .My Grand father is still Hale and healthy ,I remember he was always taking herbs and for 35 I knew him he has never visited any Hospital before .I agreed the Government should ensure that sanity and hygiene is maintained but not to rule out the efficacy of Herbs .

There are situations of some peoples having allergies to some medicines despite taking it at recommended doses, it creates another problem bigger than the solution expected to get from it. If you read that small paper that normally comes inside medicine packs you will understand what i mean. Scientists can promote their wares but condemning the other way round is a no go area. Some sicknesses are better treated using herbs and traditional method than modern methods.

You are right! It's called adverse drug reaction. And modern science has be open and admitted it. Is this not also possible with traditional medicine? Do the traditional medicine vendors admit this? Do they even tell you the ingredients in the traditional medicine?

Bros, life expectancy in Nigeria in the year 1970 is 40 years.

Forget the imaginations in your head. Majority of our grandparents died prematurely due to the kind of ignorance we see on this thread. Don't let the Obituary of the few in their 90s f00l you. For every poster you see in that age group in 2019, hundred others died some 30-50 years ago. That's what it means to have a low life expectancy of 40 years.

An improvement in life expectancy from 40 years in 1970 to around 50-54 years in 2019 shows Nigerians now live a slightly improved life. Forget all the lies you were [ignorantly] told, including those you believed pre- and post- Google era.

World's most ignorant and ill-educated beings live in Nigeria. Nigerians are as ignorant as fck.

Oga go and read. you don't know anything about the politics of international health. Stop depending on CNN for information

Good report.

As much as I like alternative medicine, the lack of prescription or dosage is a big turn off. Reckless intake of agbo can damage the body systems. Like conventional medicines, there should be a limit to what we take in.

Those condemning the report should begin to contest the authenticity and relevance of their education. Foolishness is when you take the 'white man's' medicine based on stated prescription but argue with the 'white man' on the need to stop the reckless intake of roots and leaves, the very key ingredients of conventional medicines

Like literacy rate, life expectancy is at an all-time low. Decisive steps should be taken to correct all kinds of anomalies in this country. We can't continue to ruin our lives with ignorance.

Perhaps in Nigeria there are no controls which is why there are no dosages and you have a lot of quacks there but here in Ghana we have 100% support from our government and the intake of herbal medicine is more preferred to conventional medicine which is why you would see an average Ghanaian living to the age of 100 to 105 before dying.

We used dosages here. Besides, these same western countries and doctors who condemn herbal medicine have also run back to herbal medicine but cunningly named them supplements instead of herbal medicine.

I am a naturopath in ghana and herbs are my life
