Excipients are the compounds which are used for increasing the bulk of a solid mass which carries a drug. These are inert materials. Excipients have also been called by other terms like diluents, fillers, anti-caking agents, binding agents, lubricants, coating agents, glindents, disintegrants etc., all of which are inert. Excipients also include anti-oxidants, preservatives and buffers. A number of inorganic compounds have been used as excipients in the formation of tablets, capsules, powders, granules and pills.
