Nigeria-Korea DPR (Hasely Crawford Stadium) - 15:00

Getting the ball rolling will be 2008 champions Korea DPR against African contenders Nigeria, a game which will be followed by the official opening ceremony at the Hasely Crawford Stadium – during which more than 50 performers will add their colour and flair to the start of the showpiece event. Shouldering the main burden for this enticing spectacle will be dance group Shiv Shakit and well-known producer Rosalind Gabriel, with the aim of faithfully representing the best that Trinidad and Tobago art, culture, music and dance has to offer.


A genuine force to be reckoned with on the women’s scene, how will Korea DPR’s class of 2010 go about defending the trophy won by their predecessors on New Zealand soil two years ago? First up is a tough test against a powerful Nigerian side, not that North Korean coach Ri Song-Gun seems particularly perturbed: “All our players are focusing on is picking up the win and sending a victory message to the people back home.”

I hope this girls are going to continue from where their U-"20" counterpart stopped.

The past
As the pre-eminent force in African women’s football, Nigeria will be hoping to make more of an impact on the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2010 in Trinidad and Tobago than they did two years ago in the inaugural tournament. A straightforward campaign to reach New Zealand saw them qualify with a match to spare, and they were tipped to go through from what turned out to be a topsy-turvy group. The Flamingoes beat eventual group winners Korea Republic 2-1 before falling to England 1-0. Knowing that either of them could go through with a win, Nigeria and Brazil then slugged it out to a 2-2 draw that saw neither progress to the knockout rounds.

The present
Like two years ago, the Flamingoes [/b]were the first African team to qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. In this case, their passage was booked following a 2-1 victory over South Africa at the beginning of May. But the hard work of the two-legged tie against the Bantwana was done in the first match when the west Africans ran out to an impressive 5-0 win in Abeokuta. Ugochi Oparanozie was the spark in that one-sided contest, scoring four times, including a first within a minute of the opening whistle. Ngozi Okobi claimed the fifth in the first leg, while Charity Adule and Oparanozie again bagged the two in the away leg.

Drawn into a manageable Group A in Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria coach Peter Dedevbo will be looking for a fast start in their opener against holders Korea DPR. If things do not go well in the first match there should be time to recover against two tournament debutantes: the hosts and Chile, who finished second in South American qualifying. The Flamingoes will no doubt be buoyed by the success of the Falconets, who battled their way to the Final of the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany. And though they lost to the hosts in the ultimate match, there is a feeling that the ceiling has been broken for Nigerian women’s football. “The success of [the Falconets] presents us with a big challenge,” Dedevbo, who was an assistant for the full Nigerian women’s team, said recently. “This is not the time to lower our guard now that Nigerians are turning to women’s football.”

The women’s game has become Korea DPR’s strongest footballing suit with impressive performances at all international levels in recent years. With their senior side more than capable of competing against the world’s best, it was their junior side that made history by winning the 2006 edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Inspired by the unprecedented success, they were unstoppable at the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand two years ago, sweeping past the likes of England and USA en route to clinching the crown.

The present
Entering the qualifying competition as defending continental and world champions, the East Asians opened brightly by romping past hosts Thailand 5-0. A 7-0 demolition of Myanmar sealed their place in the last four despite a 2-2 draw against Korea Republic in their final group game. In the decisive semi-final clash, they edged out Australia 4-3 to book their passage to the continental final in addition to a place at Trinidad and Tobago 2010.

The future
It goes without saying that Korea DPR head into the tournament seeking the defence of their title and for coach Ri Song-Gun, determination is key for them if they are to emulate their feat of two years ago. "The one thought our players have is to win matches to send a report of victory to our country," he said. Although a host of young talents have come through up the ranks, he places team work above individual performances to win tactical battles.
