The proprietress of Cendom International Nursery and Primary School, Olodi-Apapa, will have pay N25m as damages to a 5-year-old pupil made blind by flogging in her school. Justice Yetunde Idowu of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja who ruled on the 6-year-old case on Wednesday, after Destiny, through his father, Inyima Kalu, sued the Proprietress Uche Owen and his class teacher, Uduak Sam in 2013, for inflicting severe injuries on his right eye through flogging over the non-payment of his school fees.

In the June 20, 2011 statement, it was alleged that Uche Owen came to Destiny's classroom and flogged all the pupils who were yet to pay their school fees. It was further disclosed Destiny's right eye was covered in blood after he was flogged, and he was left in tears for several hours unattended to. The pupil was rushed to the Ajeromi General Hospital, Lagos, where he was treated and later referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba.

Punch reported that the boy's right eye was operated on without success at LUTH, and the doctor’s report revealed that it was permanently damaged and could not perceive light as a result of severe damage. While the class teacher Uduak admitted flogging the pupil on the instructions of Owen, the proprietress however denied being responsible for the injuries sustained by Destiny. They were all sued by the boy's father who demanded N30m as compensation from the school.Justice Idowu who held the two suspects linked to case liable for the permanent injury sustained by the pupil, ordered the school and its proprietress to pay N25m to the pupil made blind by flogging.
