Emmyah,

Thanks for that historical input. God Bless you!

@topic,

The value of the naira note denomination in Hausa language but written in Arabic.

For instance, N10 in Hausa is naira goma. So naira goma is written in Arabic.

Somebody is going to ask why. I say read emmyah's post the answer is in there.
Thanks this is all I wanted to see, clear concise answer

The signs spell Hausa pronunciation of those units of the currency on which they appear. The average Hausa man can read Arabic even if he does not understand the language very well. This is possible because Islam places distinct value on the ability to recite the Quran in Arabic. Understanding Arabic would be the logical progression. Unfortunately, many Muslims in Nigeria including Hausas do not understand enough Arabic even if we can read it fluently.

In essence, it is like typing all of this in Arabic because I cannot recognize the English Alphabet but can speak English, d'you get?

The words actually present the value of the currency in words using the Hausa language and written in Arabic.Even thought i can read it directly, you could try using the "Google translate" option to check such inscriptions straight up to English. Naira is spelt Nayra(which sounds more like Hausa)

The Arabic writings are called Ajami in Hausa, they are used in place of these Alphabets "ABCD, XYZ" to aid those who doesn't understand the latin alphabets but only the Arabic letters "Alif, Ba, Ta, Tha, Jim, , "

on 100 Naira notes, it reads "Naira Dari" which means 100 Naira in Hausa
on 200 Naira notes, it reads "Naira Dari Biyu" which means 200 Naira in Hausa
on 500 Naira notes, it reads "Naira Dari Biyar" which means 500 Naira in Hausa
on 1000 Naira notes, it reads "Naira Dubu" which means 1000 Naira in Hausa

There are about 20 million "NIGERIANS" who cannot read and understand the latin alphabets but can read and understand the Arabic alphabets, and they are "NIGERIANS" just as any other NIGERIAN. Not limited to a single geographic location, but nationwide*,

While the CBN decided to remove these letters from the smaller denominations, it is an absolute lack of knowledge as to the important of these letters and to whom it was targeted at, because most of those who use the arabic letters to identify the currencies are the frequent users of the smaller denominations, because they are mostly poor and survive with less than 100 naira per day mostly holding 20 naira notes and maximum 50 naira notes.

Auwal,

C'mon! Which people in Nigeria know how to excahnge monetary values but can't read latin/roman alphabets?

Yoruba language also use ajami and you don't see Yoruba on the notes. You don't need literacy to exchange money or commodities, you only need to understand computation.

It represents a political voice, that's all it is.

The North continues to push for an opportunity to insulate and shield itself from the rest of country by launching different social programs.

An illogical excuse if you ask me.

20 million undecided Where did you get this figure from ?

How old are these people?

We have over 200 languages in Nigeria, why must we pander to every one? Even in arab countries, the have stopped using 'ajami' on their number plates,so as to keep up with modernisation.

Please lets stop all this pandering to silly sentiments. People can easily identify money without Ajami scripts.

There's actually nothing wrong with that except we read meanings into everything, local solutions to local problems

It means:

1. We had two colonial Masters
English Empire and Arabic Empire.

2. We have two people who amalgamated Nigeria
Lord Luggard and Usman Dan Fodio

3. We have two National Languages
English language and Arabic language.

4. It means we have two kinds of militants
MEND and Boko Haram.

Very funny and witty.

Yeah we may have over 200 languages in Nigeria but how many have the culture of writing before the coming of the Whiteman? Ajami is the original Hausa script. The latin characters were later forcefully introduced by the colonialists. Don't forget that the oldest known written material in Nigeria is in Arabic by one Abu Musa El-Kanemi. And Arab countries are not dropping the Arabic script, in fact even the Jewish state of Israel have Arabic script on it's currency, the Shekkel. I once argued here on Nauraland that one of the reasons we have Ajami on the Naira is heritage. And that's the same reason Soludo changed his name from Charles to Chukwuma.

Is the national assembly not built like a central mosque too. Me think some forces are trying hard to portray us as a muslim state.

Agreed, Just like the capitol hill in U.S.A, the Kremlin in Russia and St. Peters Bassilica in the Vatican. Damn these Muslims.

TewMuch: Who da hell is this Emyah? If Arabic is part of the Nigerian languages, then so is latin. It is a form of calling service for muslims and that is where it ends. Kind of like praying in Latin in catholic churches. Arabic is not our language or part of Nigerian culture. Deal with it.
English that you revel in is not our language or part of Nigerian culture (whatever that means). Deal with it.

نايرا ....This means 200naira and that is not what is written on my 200naira note...I ask again what does the arabic on our money mean? It's ridiculous that a language that is not formally ours is written on our money, it is appalling and highly stupid....do u see Christians writing Hebrew on our money or Latin on our money...ONE Nigeria indeed...

English is not a Nigerian language.....Yet Arabic has been in the region far longer than English....Do you see the slave mentality of yours. Arabic as a whole has been in the West African region for hundreds (if not a over a thousand) years in West Africa and the Sahel. As someone mentioned earlier, we have an indigenous Arab ethnic group in Nigeria known as the Shuwa in Borno state that speak the Baggara dialect of Arabic.

With that said, Hausa, like Arabic is an Afro-Asiatic language. There are NUMEROUS Afro-Asiatic languages in Nigeria (about 100 - 150) mainly stemming from the Chadic branch of the Afro-Asiatic tree of languages. Afro-Asiatic usually refers to Africa (all regions in Africa except for Southern Africa where Afro-Asiatic languages are not spoken) and the Middle East where 2 Afro-Asiatic languages are spoken mainly (Arabic and Hebrew).
