Beyond 2019 General Elections...... By Hon. Emmanuel Bello No matter what, as the old saying goes, politics will remain local. The 2019 general elections has come and gone, but the wounds are yet to heal. Winners and losers have emerged, the curtain of campaign promises and trajectory of lies has been drawn, we are now left with the pricking conscience of our collective decision to choose the leaders that have emerged, and therefore must live with the consequences of this decision. In my state, the local politics has always been an oligarchy of powerful individuals that wield both the economic and political powers in the state. Unfortunately, the youths in this part of the planet are gullible beyond measure, and thus this precarious nature of the younger generation has completely wane our political frontier for positive democratic choices. This sad trend of taking orders from these political few has always left the majority in the loo. However, it is still our collective decision to deploy our social rights and privileges as a people in order to protect our political obligations of ensuring equitable political and economic distribution of common wealth in the state follows the norms of the majority. My state has not been that lucky with its choice of political leadership since the return of democracy in1999. Leaders have always emerged from this political family of few that has held the state spell bound, both in its socio-political and economic status. With so many years of manipulative tendencies to keep control of the economy of the state for the benefit of the few, no one has dared to challenge this filthy trajectory either. Those who dared in the past have always met their water loo of treachery, from within. As a people we are driven by our fear of the unknown, and it is this singular fear that has remain the body of polity in the state. Even though it is apparent that these so called few elites are no longer in charge, the fear of the unknown has continued to elude our political sense of freedom and the needful paradigm shift. They have continued to exploit this fear to our collective detriment with the onerous agenda to keep us perpetually ruled, by themselves, their children, grandchildren and great grand children Our penchant for rosy beds without pain, has blurred our vision and mission for being in politics as a people, and has rubbished our abilities and chances to elect leaders of our choice; it has also rubbished our socio cultural values of identifying true leadership and the native intelligence of selecting or electing same. We are left with lofty love for crumps and a frothy dream that has completely altered our self esteem and we have also lost the genetic values of lifting one another to that of treachery and pull-me-down syndrome on those who attempted to pull the wool off our eyelids. This group of few has not rested, it has perfected its mission to lead us astray in perpetuity through expanded antics of engrossing fault lines of religion and ethnic sentiments in our body of polity in order to keep the majority in the state in complete abeyance of truth and reality. This political fraud in my state is not only something to worry about, but something that must not be allowed to go on unabated. Our political life is being dismembered and nobody has the courage to challenge this political impunity. I am not only worried about the result of the last 2019 general elections; I am more concerned with the consequence of this vicious cycle of class imposition on our polity and the pain that we must obviously have to live with it in perpetuity. God help my State! Niger State my State!! Nigeria my country!!! Mremmphil85@gmail.com |
