The raw reality is that Nigeria Police is NOT engaged in “civil law enforcement” but rather in a virtual civil WAR against often better-armed and bloodthirsty bandits. Already, we massively underpay the Police for the risk they are placed on a daily basis on our collective behalf and subject them and their families to the most inhumane living and working conditions in filthy, dilapidated slum-like “barracks” and often transfer them with little or no notice to different states and locations often without provisions for basic accommodations and so forth.

The solution to the myriad issues of the Nigeria Police is long-term, starting with better recruiting, better training, and better conditions of service (including pay). We cannot scrape the bottom of the barrel for the least educated and enlightened segment of our population, subject them to slave-like conditions, give them guns to “protect” a population that largely scorns them, and then profess shock and outrage at the results. Meanwhile, without murderous cults and bloodthirsty kidnappers and armed robbers, there would have been no SARS.

Let’s keep a keen eye on them (and if necessary hold their feet to the fire) to ensure that this start is properly followed-up and that due justice is ultimately (and hopefully, timely) served. Nonetheless, policemen have severally been arrested, prosecuted and jailed (even sentenced to death) for extra-judicial killings in Nigeria. Law enforcement should be location/occasion specific - where the bad guys are totting automatic rifles, so should the police.
