81% of Nigerians want Jonathan to run -Survey Kemi Obasola Four months to the January 22, 2011 presidential election, 81 per cent of Nigerians, who participated in a survey conducted by NOI Polls, have asked President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the election. But, the highest proportion of respondents, who think that Jonathan should run for President, is from the South-East (89 per cent), while the lowest proportion is from the North-West (62 per cent). According to a statement made available to our correspondent on Sunday, the results of the recent poll support the findings of NOI polls in April 2010, "Which found that Nigerians were largely unsupportive of the application of a zoning formular in selecting presidential candidates. To the question, Do you think/ agree that there should be a zoning formula for the emergence of presidential candidates in nigeria?', more that six in 10 (63 per cent) respondents answered in the affirmative, while four per cent didn't know or refused to answer the question." NOI polls noted that rather than zoning, Nigerians consider other factors to be more significant when choosing the country's president. "In response to the question, What do you consider to be the most important criteria that should be applied in choosing/selecting Nigerian President?', 38 per cent of respondents answered perceived competence," said NOI polls. The appointment of Prof. Attahiru Jega as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, was commended by the respondents, who said it had boost their confidence in the commission's capacity to conduct credible elections with, "73 per cent responding Yes' to the question Does the change in leadership make you more confident or less confident in INEC's ability to conduct free and fair elections?'" According to the statement, just under 9 in 10 respondents (87 per cent) said they intended to vote in the 2011 elections. "Of the nine per cent who said they had no plans to vote in the 2011 elections, the majority (52 per cent) said they were not interested in politics while 25 per cent (one in four)said they believe that their votes will not count. The remaining 12 per cent and 11 per cent were concerned about security during the elections and said they do not believe in the credibility of aspirants, respectively," NOI Polls added. |
