When do the Chinese ever say no to expanding their foothold in Africa. I want to know is what's everyones equity share in the refinery and how its being paid for. Im curious about why Niger Republic isnt opting to refining themselves. Maybe they're in same position as Canada with oil sand.

First off, the story is about the Organisation of African Unity - OAU and not the commonwealth which you have wrongly stated from the get go.

Secondly, Onu was to hold the position in the interim whilst a resolution was sought as the candidates from Mali and Gabon couldn't compromise.

So, that is what happened....

Thanks for the information.

In fairness to GEJ, he was the one who helped Dangote secure the loans needed for takeoff of his refinery.

Plus, the Katsina refinery is sited there for convenience sake(close to the source of oil in Niger), not necessarily because Buhari comes from there.

If Nigerians twist a story out of context, even you the participant ,might get confused.

Because we don't keep records, we perpetuate dangerous lies that does nobody any good.

I have to say, our brown envelope journalists of today cannot even be good keepers of records, neither can they be good researchers, because they are more interested in their pockets than the truth.

But Onu contested got some votes but still lost while the president buhari voted for the eventual winner.

Who is urging them?

All I see is Buhari trying to unite his brothers in Niger and Northern Nigeria.

Just like he has always done when he supported a Fulani Nigerien to become the Common Wealth Secretary General over an Igbo man.

Oil was discovered in Anambra, d federal gvt didn't invest in a refinery and left d state government to carry d burden. But they are building refinery in Katsina. Same way they built a port in a landlocked state like Kaduna when they could have opened up ports in coastal states of d South/South and South/East

Well, considering he put up a link that is genuine....I doubt he lying.

Modified...From the article

The closing meeting had been delayed for a day because the group was unable to elect a replacement for its Secretary General, Edem Kodjo of Togo.

Delegates said that in a late-night sitting, more than 20 ballots were conducted in an effort to decide between rival candidates proposed by Gabon and Mali.

Both contenders refused to withdraw but neither won sufficient support, so, conference spokesmen said, an Assistant Secretary General, Peter Onu of Nigeria, was named Acting Secretary General until the dispute can be resolved. An Issue With Ideological Roots

So, in other words...Mr Onu was appointed as a placeholder till the issue was resolved.

Note that the decision was made in June 1983....six months before Bubu took over.

Canadians dont refine their heavy oil. They actually export it to the United States because they dont feel like investing money in a refinery. Heavy oil is also more expensive to refine compared to light sweet crude like Nigeria has.

I've just posted a link.

I've also told you there is no way Onu could have contested because the president of the contestant's country does the nomination.

Also, if you realise he only stepped in to mitigate a problem, do you think it's proper for him to have contested?

Lastly, just like the UN, the convention is that the powerful nations abstain from running for sec gen.

You can believe anything you were told as a rumour whilst discounting one with documentary evidence and common logic.

They will always paint the picture of its good side.

Look beyond the ephemeral and read the lines.

Are we done reviving our moribund refineries?

Why would we have to team up with Niger Republic to build a whole new refinery while that fund would have been channeled into making our existing refineries work?

Stop letting these jihadists think for you.

Learn to use your God given brain for what it's meant for.
Are you really sure you don't also need that bolded advice you gave?... Maybe you also need to stop letting your emotions and ethnic prejudices think for you. The refinery in Katsina is not being built by the government, it's private

Here is a UPI report from 1985...

There was no mention, however, of any specific disputes between OAU members, such as the border conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia and the Libyan occupation of northern Chad.

Delegates also hope to elect a new secretary-general to replace Peter Onu of Nigeria. He has been interim head of the OAU for two years because no candidate has secured the necessary two-thirds vote at previous summits.

The refinery in Katsina is private. And due to it's location, it's more economically sensible to feed it with oil from Nigerien fields.

Funnily enough, to stir the pot...

Here is this anecdote....see below

Having read that....I still think that Onu lost because the guy who won had prolly more support among African leaders than did he.

At any rate, that's enough historical argument for me. The problem with Nairaland is tribalism and tribalism

Why waste your time on children of hate ?. Their online propaganda is yet to materialize Igbo president, Biafra land, Atiku ambition etc. They are now into porn industry, for the first no crime committed only moral laws faulted. If they can keep up with legitimate jobs & reduce their hate to 5000 % a day, we might have had Biafra land for them. Long live Nigeria.

And hey, they seem to be having the upper hand due to tyranny of the majority not really about strategy.

Have you wondered why Buhari lost the educated south and "won" the illiterate north?

Lol you cant answer the simple question I asked. Why is the investments bad. You dont have an issue with militants disrupting oil to Kaduna refinery but you're here crying about the president seeking alternatives.

Lol Atiku still lost in middle belt and in some SW states. Even with the murders he couldn't win. Demographics determines a lot outcomes.

If I term myself educated, I should mellow to superior facts until more superior facts emerge.

So, fallibilistically, I'm gonna take your side of the story for now while I take time to verify what truly happened at the time.
