Four motorcycle operators popularly known as Okada riders have been docked and remanded in prison custody for allegedly attacking a senior Police Officer, Lebi Augustine, attached to the Ikotun Police Division in Lagos. The suspects identified as Allen Azeez, 47, Olanrewaju Adebanjo, 34, Nureni Abiola, 33, Ismaila Oyedapo, 49 and others at large were charged before the Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court for assault. Akeliciouswas informed that the police officer narrowly escaped death after he was attacked and mobbed by motorcycle operators in the area. It was also gathered that the incident happened at Egbe by Cele bus stop in Ikotun Area of Lagos, where the officer, Augustine, went to answer a distress call with a team of police officers. On arrival, the Okada riders were said to have mobilized themselves, attacked Augustine, tore his uniform and attempted to set him ablaze before he managed to escape with severe injuries. He was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he is still receiving treatment while the other police officers who went with him to the scene were said to be lucky and escaped unhurt. The police later mobilized and arrested some members of the group who had attacked the officer. The prosecutor, Kenneth Asibor, informed the court that the victim was a serving police officer who was on lawful duty before he was brutally attacked by the suspects alongside other accomplices who were said to be at large. The magistrate, Mr. T.O. Shomade, granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. They were, however, remanded in prison custody pending when they will perfect their bail condition. The matter was adjourned till 13 May, 2019.
