Another Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) official has been killed by gunmen, six months after one, Edoga Eze, was gunned down in Imo State on his way back from court together with his colleagues.

EFCC Head of Forensic Unit, Abdulahi Muazu, was assassinated in the wee hours of Tuesday in his residence in Kaduna.

A statement issued by the EFCC condemning the murder also accused the Rivers State Government of sponsoring attacks on its officials and office in Port Harcourt.

EFCC Spokesman Femi Babafemi, who signed the statement, said Muazu was killed in a cruel manner by unknown assailants.

“Those behind this attack may have succeeded in killing a strategic hand and a key witness in some of our ongoing cases but their act has failed to dampen our spirit or deter us from continuing our investigation and prosecution of all forms of economic crimes and corruption in the country,” Babafemi stressed.

EFCC Chairman Farida Waziri has directed a team of operatives from the headquarters to go to Kaduna and assist the security agencies in the investigation of the murder.

Babafemi alleged that “public funds are again being diverted in Rivers State to sponsor attacks on our men and office in Port Harcourt. These attacks are to begin with the mobilisation of 1,000 persons from each of the 23 local government areas of the state to stage a protest against the EFCC on September 15.

“This is to be followed by yet another protest by various women groups rejecting the presence of the EFCC in the state. The real motive behind these sponsored protests is to set ablaze the Commission’s zonal office in Port Harcourt in a desperate bid to cripple (its) activities in the state and the entire South South.”

However, the EFCC gave an assurance that while it will continue to do its work within the ambit of the law, it has the right to defend itself and its officials against hirelings paid to attack them under the guise of staging protests.

“The EFCC remains a creation of the laws of the Nigerian Federation and as such, no force of gangsterism in any part of the country will stop it from carrying out its statutory responsibilities.”

Waziri had on March 21 launched a counter offensive with the argument that the attacks on her and other EFCC officials, which led to the death of Eze, were politically motivated.

“I am a frustrated woman,” she lamented, saying the EFCC lacked the enabling environment to function effectively.

Five EFCC operatives were on March 19 attacked on the Mbano-Okigwe Road on their way to Enugu.

They were returning from Owerri where they had attended court proceedings in a case involving Albert, the husband of the former Aviation Minister, Kema Chikwe.

Albert is being tried for an alleged N40 million fraud.

Waziri told a press conference at EFCC headquarters in Abuja on March 21 that she was alerting the nation of a grand plot by unscrupulous elements to embarrass the Commission and its leadership.

She said this was done through false publications, campaigns of calumny and of rumours.

She added that the EFCC personnel were ambushed and shot by about 15 hired assassins on their way from the Federal High Court, Owerri.

“It is with deepest regret that the Commission lost one of its officers in the unfortunate incident. Two other staff were critically injured in the attack and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

“In a manner typical of cowards, the officers were trailed from the court premises by the assailants who later opened fire on them along Okigwe Road,” Waziri recounted.

She vowed, however, that no amount of threats or attacks on the staff of the EFCC by the “highly placed Politically Exposed Persons” would deter them from prosecuting the war against corruption.

“While we pray that the soul of the departed rests in perfect peace and that the injured receive a very quick recovery, we wish to assure all Nigerians and indeed the international community that the resolve and determination of the Commission to bring all corrupt elements in the country to justice can never be shaken by acts of intimidation and blackmail.”

Waziri maintained that the fight against corruption is at the centre of governance in Nigeria, the EFCC cannot, therefore, shy away from such an important responsibility because of threats “by the very people whose conduct has inflicted unimaginable damage on the economy, and avoidable poverty on our people at large.”

She described herself as a “frustrated woman” as the EFCC does not have the tools to work with.

“I am a frustrated woman. I asked for a Special Court and it is not forthcoming. The cases are being stalled. The Asset Forfeiture Bill that was put together was thrown out by the National Assembly.”
