Murtala Nyako, the governor of Adamawa State, has approved the recruitment of 15,000 ``Special Assistants'' from the 226 wards in the state.

Aminu Iyawa, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity told the News Agency of Nigeria Wednesday that the recruitment falls under the government's Grassroots Socio-Economic
Empowerment Programme, aimed at reducing poverty and unemployment in the state.Mr Iyawa said the new aides, mostly youths, would be nominated by their respective wards' elected councillors.``This is a programme that has been existing for the past three years. ``Government has established a vocational technicaltraining centre in each of the three senatorial zones,located in Mubi, Mayo-Belwa and Yola towns,while Farming Skill Acquisition Centres were established in all the 21 local government areas.``The new SAs and rural farmers are expected to go and learn some trade and farming skills at the centres,'' he said. Mr Iyawa said the empowerment programmes introduced by the Nyako administration has made positive impact, particularly at the grassroots.


``Also, many youth are self-employed and even employees, while many households are now engaged in fish farming and animal husbandry.
