The people probably have other things to do, if they were not PAID to come to the rally. Most Nigerian's are hustling up and down for their daily bread. Jonathan does not need to pay supporters like your sponsor whose thugs are fighting not too far away from eagle's square

S’South govs won’t betray Jonathan — Amaechi
By Niyi Odebode, Olamilekan Lartey, Olusola Fabiyiand Chukwudi Akasike

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi on Tuesday said South-South governors would not betray President Goodluck Jonathan, by accepting a vice-presidential slot from any candidate.

Amaechi, in an interview with one of our correspondents in Port Harcourt, said that South-South governors had committed themselves to making sure that Jonathan was elected President in 2011.

Amaechi’s colleagues in the South-South are Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta); Senator Liyel Imoke (Cross River); Mr. Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa) and Mr. Adams Oshiomhole (Edo).

The Rivers State governor was reacting to reports in some national newspapers (excluding THE PUNCH) that some South-South governors had entered into a discussion with two Northern presidential aspirants — Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar — on the possibility of two governors from the South-South being picked as vice-presidential candidates.

The reports had stated that Babangida and Abubakar were determined to choose their running mates from the zone (South-South) to undermine the ambition of Jonathan, who hails from the zone.

Amaechi, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Blessing Wikina, said, “We are not in discussion with anybody on the issue. All we are doing is to work hard and ensure that President Jonathan wins the presidential election.

”Rule us out of any kind of national politics. Rule us out of the vice-presidential position because we are not part of it and we are not interested in it.

The position of the South-South governors on the need to support President Jonathan is clear and it is binding on all of us.

Insisting that he was not interested in the vice-presidency, Amaechi said that he had a four- year mandate from the people of Rivers State, which he was bent on completing.

The Rivers governor was, however, absent from a pro-Jonathan rally in Port Harcourt, organised by political groups in the Niger Delta on Tuesday.

Also, none of the governor’s aides was at the event, though the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, said Amaechi had travelled to the United States.

The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mr. Nathan Egba, who also reacted to the reports, said those behind the “latest kite” would not succeed.

“We are resolute in our support for President Jonathan. We are committed to his success at the PDP primaries and the general elections,” he said.

THE PUNCH had learnt on Monday evening that Northern politicians had started searching for a prominent indigene of the South-South that would be made the running mate of a consensus Northern presidential candidate.

The politicians were said to have held two separate meetings in Kaduna, Kaduna State and Minna, Niger State, towards achieving the purpose.

The meetings, according to one of the politicians, were called to decide which of the six states in the South-South would produce the running mate.

the same gangstars that brought yar adua/jonathan's govt is still in place.
we must remember obasanjo never opened up to his desire for third term.
i am not interested in who the next president will be but my worries are more on the means by which is selected.
in other countries where u have leaders with genuine ambitions, they will stay away from active politics when they leave office but what do we have here? a group of criminals who move from one post to the other even at 200 yrs old just to die stealing.
let pdp make the ground smooth for every contestant so that the masses will have a say in who will rule them.

Anti-graft agency alleges plot against it by Rivers government

Farida Waziri, chairman, EFCC

While the Rivers State commissioner for information, Ibim Semenitari, on Tuesday, denied an alleged planned protest against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) sponsored by the state government, the people of the state on Wednesday staged a demonstration against the anti-graft agency.

Thousands of delegates from the 23 local government areas in the state, wearing T-shirts with anti-EFCC inscriptions and placards marched from Isaac Boro Park to the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office axis and back to the Government House to express their displeasure over the recent arrest of state government’s officials by the agency.

Some of the inscriptions on the T-shirts and placards borne by the protesters read: ‘EFCC Please Obey the Law’, ‘WE will not be Intimidated, We will defend our state against EFCC’, “EFCC and Farida should Obey the Rule of Law’, EFCC should leave Rivers State alone.” Reacting to the allegation, the information commissioner, Ibim Semenitari said, “We are not aware of any protest against EFCC officials or its zonal office in Port Harcourt. Governor Amaechi is the chief executive officer of Rivers State and will not be involved in what can lead to the breakdown of law and order. If there is a plan by some people to protest, it may be a private initiative.

“It is laughable that anybody or organisation can accuse Rivers government of planning arson or attack on EFCC’s officials. We cannot do that. The Rivers State governor and government are responsible.”

Meanwhile, the recent brawl between the state government and the anti-graft agency started when the commission arrested three local government officials in the state over alleged diversion of N12 billion local government funds about two weeks ago.

EFCC had arrested the three officials when it could not find the five commissioners and three council chairmen said to be directly linked with the allegation, despite combing their ministries and local government areas.

In reaction to the arrest, the state governor, Chibuike Amaechi, while declaring open an information summit held in Port Harcourt on Thursday, September 2, 2010, faulted EFCC’s action, citing an existing court injunction which barred the commission from investigating the state officials.

No one ever said that Jonathan must win, but IBB shall be stopped at all cost. He will never smell Aso rock again. Nigerian's are not slaves or demented people that keep taking whips and keep quiet. IBB has done his worst. He can either choose to retire and enjoy his loot, since he is being protected by the government from prosecution. Or expose himself to being treated like an animal. I hope he doesnt complain when he does. And there is freedom of speech. All contestants for presidency should be ready to have their lives scrutinized. If you cant stand the heat, then get the hell out of the kitchen. As for vicknesh, i am just showing off his lies and useless propaganda. IBB cannot be Nigeria's president, we cannot afford it.

Clarice Azuatalam, Port-Harcourt 16/09/2010 00:00:00

THOUSANDS of people in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, Wednesday protested the "unfairness" of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the state.

The demonstrators, who carried placards with inscriptions, such as: "EFCC please obey the law"; "EFCC now a political tool"; "EFCC please leave Rivers people alone"; "Farida obey court orders and judgment"; "EFCC the Nigerian Gestapo" marched on the offices of the commission.

The group’s spokesmen, Johnny Bazia and Kingsley Chinda, condemned the arrests of some state officials. They said the EFCC had been restrained by a court injunction.

Chinda said: "We are not against the fight against corruption; what we are against is the style and method."

He urged the agency to vacate the court order before arresting any government official.

The protesters praised the efforts of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.

The agency’s Head of Operations in the Southsouth, Hycient Edozie, hailed the protesters for their peaceful approach. He promised to convey their message to the headquarters in Abuja.

Edozie said if the protesters are not satisfied with the commission they are free to go to the courts.

The protesters also marched on the Government House, where another spokesman, Sam Oge, said the people were not afraid of the EFCC.

Oge enjoined the agency not to allow itself to be used as a political tool to witch-hunt people.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ken Chikere, said the state has obtained two judgments against the EFCC.

Deputy Governor Tele Ikuru described Amaechi as "a man of the rule of law, who will continue to respect the law because he became governor through the rule of law".

The state has denied any plans to destroy the agency’s offices, as alleged by the EFCC.

Commissioner for Information Ibim Semenitari said: "Not only has the agency taken on the role of distracting the government, it has employed de-marketing tactics to destroy the region’s economy.

"We have not joined issues with the EFCC, but it has become clear to us that what was meant to be a noble institution may have become a tool of oppression, mischief and blackmail in the hands of unpatriotic and diabolical elements.

"The state is open for business. All our activities are transparent for all to see."
SORRY FOR THE MISS UP. THIS IS TODAYS NEWSPAPER AND IF YOU KNOW ANYBODY IN RIVERS STATE ASK HIM IF THERE IS ANY PROTEST IN RIVERS STATE YESTERDAY OR NOT. grin grin

The story of FOX NEWS and MSNBC is clearly playing out in Nigerian politics

You have folks stuck is what they believe and not ready to admit that anything good can come out of the other side. While the spectral divide in America has been driven by liberal or conservative ideologies and conviction, it is not clear what drives Nigeria's political divide.

Our country is in trouble. Those who make noise about democracy only see it as a vehicle to capture power. Once they get there or their kinsman gets there they say or support anything just to cling to power.

We really need to grow up

Fair enough. But lets not talk about others paying people to attend their ralies when we have no money trail to prove it.

If what we are saying is that Nigerians only attend political rallies when they are paid and hence anybody able to attract folks must have paid for the attendees then let us say so. because that will simply mean whoever attracts the highest crowd is the highest payer.

If you have been bitten by a snake, then you will be cautious with ordinary rope. Those that are calling for IBB 2nd coming are either his sycophants, too young during his reign of terror or were not in the country. IBB apology could be accepted if he can raise those that died as a result of annulment of June 12 election. Those easterners that are in his campaign has forgotten how many of their people that were perished while fleeing from Lagos in 1993. People are no longer interested in the zone or region that produces the president, but who is ready to deliver dividends of democracy to the people. Even the Northerners know that there are no credible person contesting from the region.

IBB the evil genious is at it again. It is obvious that he has no shame and he is obviously in no doubt that his antics will get him far.Little does the former dictactor know that he has many factors militating against his ambition. He should go back to his shell and lick his wounds before it's too late. This will serve as a big lesson to him.He would have had his name in the sands of time if he had done the incredible in 1993.IBB you are a huge FAILURE,Nigerians being the peaceful people that we are, are obviously not STUPID.I rather vote for a retard than vote that JUNE 12 traitor.

How I wish this shameless man will win and then the election annulled. Let him have a taste of what he did to Abiola. So he loves power. Truly the best thing we owe the naughty person is to stone him to death. Rubbish thing
Nemesis will surely catch up with him,it's only a matter of time.

Some of the posters read “Different faces of IBB: The evil genius strikes;” “Do not be deceived, Maradona, the actor is at it again;” and “Nigerians beware, the military are back, again.”

What do you expect from a military man like that called maradona. God will deliver nigeria from people like them all Amen.
