I am a career inclined fresh graduate.I want to get to the peak of my profession.I know exactly where I want to be but the challenge is exactly how to get there.Cos when I meet people who are ahead of me(career-wise),they all seem to say the same thing about the most logical starting point of my chosen field. The SNAG,however, is that as much as I am interested in building a career,I am also very much interested in making MONEY and this recommended point pays veeeeery little.

oludashmi:

Good treatment. But I think you need to start your biz along the way while you continue with the present one and later break away. Dont say cos you are being well taken care of, you forget that you are still a slave in a master's suit.

good one! can you send me your email pls?

I can sense your advice was offered with very good intentions, but the bolded caught my attention. Maybe its just me but I have a big problem with the way some Nigerians(some other folks do it also, but I'm Nigerian so) treat their employers businesses. This mindset of doing something on the side kills productivity and hurts the employee too, it takes your focus away from your present job and robs you of the attention you need to give to your other passion.

Those of us who grew up in naija have seen it several times, from the civil servant with multiple private businesses to the banker running a cement shop on the side, I don't see it as multitasking at all. It is dishonest and discourages specialization(something we seriously need in all sectors of our economy)

I believe it is better to do your research, make up your mind and go for your passion. Doing too many things at the same time does you little to no good and hurts our economy on a macro level IMO.

My greatest challenge is completing my MBA program and coming back home within the shortest possible time. My belief is that there are greater opportunities back home which any average Nigerian youth can take advantage of, compared to abroad.

I graduated from one of the federal Universities in Nigeria 11 years ago with a B.sc in Economics.Worked as a banker for 9years,qualified as an accountant in the course of work, but all through my banking I was only in Banking operations,The job became so monotonous, the Lagos traffick hold ups never helped matters either likewise witch hunting and bad blood at work.
I knew I needed a break and a rebranding, so I left my job for a masters in Finance in the UK. Am grateful to God the M.sc programme is over now and its like am starting all over again from the scratch but I know the future is very bright though very challenging. If I dont lose hope I will surely eat the good of the land.Once there's a will there will always be a way.

It is well!

Re: What Is Your Biggest Career Challenge Today? by anyason: 7:15pm On Oct 05, 2010
Most of the things we see as big challenges are not really as big as we see it. If you truely want to be a succesful person, you must be ready to leave your comfort zone. Many people's dreams and aspirations in life are short-circuted owing to fear.
Peresonally, right from my childhood, it has always been my desire to be my own boss. In pursuance of this, i left my job.  And today it is a dream come true. Remember, "you can't be rich by working for someone" though the greatest reoccuring question everybody asks is "where is the required capital" but  i must tell you that the capital comes from determination, focus and your ability to surmount discouragement from people. Just go into what you enjoy doing.
One of the laws of Physics states that (though not a phycist) " An object remains at a state of rest until a force is acted on it"
Remember, nothing moves until you move it.  Those things we see as challenges may not really be all that tidous. It is easier to be done than imagined.
START THAT BIZ, YOU CAN DO IT
GO TO THAT SCHOOL, IT IS POSSIBLE
STUDY THAT COURSE, IT IS EASY
Please, always dream big and pursue it vigorously. It pays. Success!

I just graduated and should go for NYSC later this month so my career has not even started. That said, my immediate challenge is to convince PWC KPMG that i deserve to be interviewed- and ultimately a chance to work with them. Am also thinking of a world class business school where i should get an MBA in Finance. Finally, am also trying to figure out the best time to go for the MBA. My mother thinks am bothering myself unnecesarily but i've seen too many people fail, i can't afford to fail. Thats my motivation, i have zero tolerance for failure (in my career)

In less than two months I'll be writing my final exams in university. My greatest challenge now is knowing that I have to write ICAN to back up my degree in Accountancy, and that'll have to be achieved during NYSC. After that I intend working in PriceWaterHouse   cool cool. Or a reputable auditing firm before I eventually branch out to my firm. Now that's a dream! Just hope it all works out and God help me!
