Boko Haram fighters in northeastern Nigeria attacked and overran an army outpost, stealing weapons before fleeing.

Gunmen from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), the ISIL-linked faction of Boko Haram, attacked the base in Borno state late on Friday, two military sources said on Saturday.

The fighters, driving more than a dozen pick-up trucks with heavy machine guns welded onto the back, were accompanied by three armoured personnel carriers stolen from security forces.

Flanked by a fleet of fighters firing from motorcycles, they burst out from the bush and sped straight towards the base.

"There was a serious gunfight," said one military officer, who asked not to be named.

"The troops put up a good fight, but they were outgunned and overwhelmed ... Unfortunately, the base fell to the ISWAP terrorists, who took away weapons and fled."

There was no immediate official response from the army or casualty figures.

The base at Mararrabar Kimba lies 135km from the state capital Maiduguri.

One witness in the town of Biu 45km away reported that soldiers arrived on Saturday from the sacked base and some were wounded.

The decade-long Boko Haram conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and forced millions from their homes.

The violence has spread to neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting a regional military coalition against the fighters.

In recent weeks, coalition forces involving Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon have pounded Boko Haram hideouts in the Lake Chad area with air raids, as well as launching ground assaults.

My problem with these terrorist is that if you were to ask what they are fighting and killing for, you’d never get any reasonable response.

I think they are the blood sucking agents of the devil himself!

Bokoharam is alive because we as a country failed to do the needful when they initially started their campaign in 2002. And as it stands, the menace will continue unabated until certain issues are addressed in all sincerity .

Isn't it baffling that such brazen attacks could be perpetrated on our troops with our supposed ISR platforms patrolling the skies?

How comes such a Large fleeing convoy of attackers billowing dust to the high heavens will just disappear into oblivion with their loot in a deserted Savannah grassland without being spotted by our air assets?

BH attacking our troops with assets carted away from our armouries in previous attacks is tantamount to our troops being killed by tax payers money.

How are these guys always out gunned. It shows the nations domestic arms industry is negligible. Where is DICON to supply them. Why not do more contracting with private sector to establish MIC. We're too reliant on foreign suppliers for some basic equipment.

BH are probably running out of arms and have approached their usual customers for more arms.
Holding territory for long will do them no good. Now that their armoury is replenished, the question is where are they going to strike next.

They could as well attack the neighboring countries or another military outpost. One would think by now the military air force would have perfected their strategy on how to react in the quickest possible time.

Ten year war is a long time to learn on the job. Soldiers recruited and fighting in the northeast would have attained the rank of a sergeant by now.

Damn, have we learnt anything? BH is

In that case he should resign for the 'Northern elders' to take charge. you can't be the commander in chief of the Armed forces of Nigeria and expect some elders do your job for you.
