Once the most popular instant messaging application in the world, BBM otherwise known as Blackberry messenger is shutting down 31st May, announced in a blogpost by Emtek (who took over the running of the app from 2016).
The consumer version which was made popular by Blackberry devices and later made available as a standalone app for Android and iOS users will no longer be available after the 31st of May.

“We poured our hearts into making this a reality, and we are proud of what we have built to date. The technology industry however, is very fluid, and in spite of our substantial efforts, users have moved on to other platforms, while new users proved difficult to sign on. Though we are sad to say goodbye, the time has come to sunset the BBM consumer service, and for us to move on” the company shared on its blog.

The enterprise version will however still be available for download for free on Android and iOS but users will be required to pay $20 subscription fee every six months. One thing to note is that BBM enterprise version does offer end-to-end message encryption like WhatsApp; so, it’s definitely
worth trying if you are a big fan.

Last year, saw the end of Yahoo Messenger and a few weeks ago, Google shuts down its Google+ service. These were once the biggest social apps once upon a time just as BBM was.
