Necessity, they say, is the mother of invention. Driving round some important roads in the Lekki axis and increasingly Victoria island, you will not help but notice that the roads are paved not with asphalt, but with paving stones also called interlocking stones.

This “invention” for roads in these waterlogged and sandy areas was born out of necessity. Asphalt roads are expensive to construct, do not last long before they fail in spots and even more expensive to maintain in these areas where the water level can literarily be at the surface in the raining seasons.

In reality, many private estates have employed the use of paving stones within their estates because or their relative ease of construction and maintenance. They also last longer. Roads in government schemes like the Lekki Scheme 1 and Scheme 2 have also been extensively made from paving stones.

However the government of Lagos state took the bull by the horn when in 2013 the state governor Babatunde Fashola directed firms handling its road reconstruction jobs to adopt the use of paving stones instead of asphalt at troublesome spots.

That same year the state government purchased paving stones production machines for the Public Works Corporation of the Ministry of Works saddled with the responsibility of fixing street roads.

In 2018 the Lagos State Public Works/Drainages has acquired three Road Printer Paving Stone Laying Machines to enhance road construction and maintenance in the State. the Machines were purchased to work on waterlogged areas where Asphalt will not be suitable, saying it will also allow for easy maintenance of work at a reduced cost compared to Asphalt work.

Subsequently, some very important roads in waterlogged areas that have been newly constructed with paving stones include.

Akin Adesola Road, Victoria Island- The road is located in Victoria Island with a total length of 1635m and was originally an asphalt road.
Freedom Road, Lekki Phase 1
Admiralty Road, Lekki phase 1
Bisola Durosimi-Etti road

Most of the roads in Lekki scheme 1 and other Lagos state government schemes were originally constructed or converted to paving stones a long time ago.

However the use of paving stones for road construction is not particularly new. Over two thousand years ago, the Romans developed a simple system for building roads. Some of these roads are still in use today.
