Are the Igbos Landlocked? by desmond2pk: 5:42pm On May 07, 2019 |
I have heard a lot of people, well respected journalists and others say that Igbos are landlocked so therefore they are not going to move forward ( as if Nigeria is moving forward ) if granted a country of their own. I have read posts and comments especially here on Nairaland that a Biafra as a country will not make progress because they are land locked. I have noted that such comments always come from non igbos, when attacking igbos or the idea of Biafra. One of the disadvantages of being s landlocked country is being unable to have access to the sea, for easier and cheaper transportation. Many countries are landlocked. And examples are ethopia, austria, zimbabwe, uganda, niger, chad, hungary, switzerland etc. Some of these countries are performing well and some are not. And, surprisingly they are not worse than those close to the sea. Igbos do not need see, to make progress as a nation. The god that placed them at that goegraphical position knows that they do not need the sea to make progress. Igbos, from the deepest hinterland, came to Papa, south west, the part of Nigeria where port is located, to own 80% of both landed properties and businesse. You don't need to be near port to be successful. Today, Ethiopian airways is almost the best in Africa, they didn't achieve it by have a sea. Switzerland is known as the world headquarters for banking. They didn't achieve it by have a seashore. According to frederick forsyth, in one of his books, the eastern nigeria had more than 500,000 engineers, teachers, civil servants in the northern nigeria, before the civil war. They had no sea and were landlocked. Before the civil war, the igbos had more senior military personels than the entire nigeria. Currently, the igbos lead in academic in nigeria, bases of ratings released by educational bodies like waec etc. But they are land locked. Lately, Nigeria is working on a dry port that has been cited in kaduna. They idea is to help business move to the north. If the government would not single out ibos, before you know it, the port would be owned by them. Ofcourse, the north needs auto spare parts, the north needs building materials, the north needs hospital equipments. And who are the foremost in importation of all these? The igbos. The igbos don't need Nigeria ports. Nigeria ports need them. If nigeria refused to let igbos have access to the ports, the sky will open up. And business will open up. |

The problem is that many Nigerians have come to believe that Igbo land is the so called 'South East'. Because these people have not travelled past the River Niger, they dont know that Igbo land is much bigger than that. When the white man came to the area now known as Nigeria, he recognised that Ignos were a group of people who spoke Igbo as their ancestral language, have Igbo surnames and practices the same culture The white man drew a map of Igbo land which I will attach below. From the map, anyone can see that Igbo is not landlocked. It's most southern tip opens up into the ocean
