Funkybabee: i think the aim of higher institutions is to impact knowledge and bring innovation to society but if is not doing that it is a waste. Universities nowadays are center of brainwashing rather than education. |

Xavi2019: i will have to agree with the op most people who had an impact to human society are not political scientist rather doctors, engineers and other technical fields |

lilwetdick:So, going by your reasoning they should just scrap other fields and leave just doctors, engineers and the "other technical fields" then, since political scientists and other fields not in the sciences haven't had any impact on human society? I wonder what the likes of Karl Deutsch, David Easton, Samuel P. Huntington, Harold Lasswell, Nicholo Machiavelli, Robert Dahl and the likes did since you say Political Scientists didn't have any impact on human society. Yes the impact of these so-called professions you mentioned are more visibly felt in the society, but that's not enough reason to look down in other fields under the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. If you say people who specialise in understanding the mechanism and constitutional systems of modern government, principles of government, as well as the domestic and foreign policies of nations aren't making any impact on human society, then I wonder why you feel so, since they have as much impact as those fields you mention. A doctor could save one life, a bad policy could affect millions. Think about that. My point - Don't look down on any profession/field they are important in their own special way, be it a Pharmacist or Horticulturist. 4 Likes |

ALL FIELD OF STUDY IRREGARDLESS OF WHERE & MODE OF STUDY SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDER IRRELEVANT. OW CAN A PERSON IN HIS RIGHT SENSE CLAIMED OTHER FIELDS OF STUDY ARE NOT WORTHY EXCEPT SCIENCE. IF ANYONE HAS THE PRIVILEGE TO STUDY ABROAD HE/SHE SHOULD PLS TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY, ITS NOT ADVISABLE TO WASTE UR PRECIOUS TIME & RESOURCES IN A COUNTRY THAT CANT PROVIDE ITS CITIZEN COMMON BASIC AMENITIES OR A COUNTRY WHERE LECTURERS WILL BE BOASTING NO STUDENT WILL EVER SCORE 100% OF MARK IN HIS COURSE NOR A COUNTRY THAT DOESN'T HAVE A FUTURE LIKE OUR THEIR NIGERIA EXCEPT IF U ARE A POLITICIAN. 1 Like |

Aphroditee: You haven't answered his question, did you read the post? I think people study irrelevant courses abroad because they want to use the study visa for work as opposed to using it to obtain a career. If you read through posts on student focused threads, you'll notice that many students are more concerned about work than the actual course. It seems like studying any course gives them the license to work and make a few bucks, this is why they don't seem to care what courses they opt for 1 Like |

thebosstrevor: You're assuming studying them is only for the money and job security they can provide. They have their values, too. We just haven't gotten to that stage in this part of the world. You actually know why things aren't developing, moving forward this country? It's because people lack passion. In their pursuits, careers, dreams and everything! We chose jobs we don't love for the money and then we end up not making impactful changes in those areas. My parents wanted me to go for a particular course, but seeing into the future and the path I want to take, the kind of life I want to live, I don't know any change I can bring into that profession, I have no passion to do anything great in that area. But for my current course of study, and generally disciplines related to it... I have big dreams for them. Like, really big dreams. Yes, I know this is Nigeria - and we are in this part of the world, but that doesn't matter. Dreams are everything, and I believe powerfully in them 1 Like |
