Yes the church is dead with respect the church being the salt of the Earth, and the life of the salt is in its savor.

For Jesus said to the church:

Matthew 5:13 (KJV)

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

So from this saying of Jesus, it could be deduced the fact that the church which is the salt of the Earth could lose its savor.

And when it loses it savor it hence becomes good for nothing but to be cast out and trodden under the foot of men.

So for salt to be good for nothing and useless to that extent when it loses it savor, it means that savor is the life of the salt, so when salt loses it savor it has lost its life, and what remains of the salt is just its dead body, which is good for nothing.

And considering the functions of salt that make the church to be the salt of the Earth, which is to preserve, heal, nourish, give taste, cleanse etc., it is well obvious that the church which is the salt of the Earth has lost its savor, as it is no longer able to serve its purposes as the salt of the Earth.

So what is left of the church is just the dead body which is good for nothing, but to be trodden under the feet of men, as is the case where the church has become a laughing stock to men. For despite that they can see it just about everywhere they go, it has become good for nothing to them as it is not able to serve its purpose in their lives.

But the good news for the church is that the savour of the church that makes it to be the salt of the Earth, even that which it lost, is yet on the Earth. For it is the Spirit of God.

For He is the life of the church and the one that gave it the savour to be the salt of the Earth, that it was, and hence able to serve its purpose as the salt of the Earth. Therefore it was said:

Acts 1:4, 8 (KJV)

4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

So it was the Spirit of God that was going to give the church life, and make it possible for the church to be able to serve its purpose as the salt of the Earth that it was, hence the need for the church not to depart from Jerusalem but to wait until the Spirit of God had come upon her. Hence it was said:

Acts 2:1-4 (KJV)

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And hence the Spirit of God brought the church to life, and gave it the ability to serve its purpose as the salt of the Earth, as could be observed in the book of Acts.

So that's what the church has lost today, that has made her to be without savour, and hence good for nothing but to cast down and trodden under the feet of men.

Therefore for the church to come back to life and be able to serve its purpose as the salt of the Earth, it must do everything possible to get its savour back in the person of the Holy Spirit, otherwise it would remain good for nothing but to be trodden under the feet of men, even though its dead body is littered everywhere to be seen of men.

The Lord sees what no man can see. He knew satan was trying to use Peter against Him. He told Peter that satan was desiring to sift him like wheat, but that He had prayed for him. He knew that Satan was using Peters tongue, hence he rebuked satan behind the scene, not Peter.
