2014 C’wealth Games: Abuja’s Chances Improve ! by wales(m): 6:33am On Sep 23, 2010
Abuja’s chances of hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games improved on Thursday after the withdrawal of Halifax, Canada, narrowing the contest to a two-horse race.

With Halifax claiming that the $1.7bn cost of hosting the Games as high, the race is now between the Nigerian capital and Glasgow, the second largest city in Scotland.

Abuja, which is bidding to host the second most-important sporting event in the world, will now fancy its chances in the race.

Abuja’s bid is anchored on the fact that it should be the first city in Africa to host the rest of the Commonwealth in 2014, the same year that is the centennial anniversary of the amalgamation of the Southern and Northern protectorates that eventually made up Nigeria.

The retired Gen Yakubu Gowon, a former Head of State of the country, heads the Abuja bid for the ‘Friendly Games’.

As a prelude to hosting the Commonwealth Games, Abuja hosted the eighth All Africa Games in the ultramodern National Stadium in 2003.

The host city will be named on Nov 7, 2007 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

We should forget about hosting the games. The Billions of Naira could be spent on other areas to create lasting jobs for Nigerians. Nobody is going to visit Abuja as a tourist because of the high cost of living in Nigeria 9execep the Beer of course).
