10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Nairaland. by sparkle7: 4:26pm On May 14, 2019
1. Nairaland had a sister website
The owner and founder of nairaland had 3 website he was managing at the young days of starting up the Nigerian forum. The name of Nairaland sister website is nairalist.com but it has long being closed down due to some undisclosed reasons and a price tag of $3k slammed on it.
2. Romance section a traffic spinner: It is no new gist that the romance section drives the most traffic in Nairaland. So sexual threads have reached a record 10k views in 1hr. Ironically the website started as forum where mobile network users meetup and interact about issues with their mobile network providers back in 2005. But the sexual topics which was thrown into the off topic section garnered more views and traffic than the main purpose threads. This caused a dynamic change in Nairaland as the founder being business oriented made a standalone section to house Romance threads.
3. Nairaland started as an SMF forum:
Nairaland was previously built and managed with SMF meaning Simple Machines Forum www.simplemachines.org/
a Php driven Content management system used for building scalable website forums with high responsiveness on mobile phones.
It was chosen due to its lightweight and small file size.
But as traffic increased and people registering in their numbers, the whole site had to be redesigned with an easy to maintain language, in this case python.
It is highly possible that a python framework was used in building a brand new Nairaland.
4. $200 bid for Nairaland
Way back in 2005 at the early stages of growth of Nairaland, a user once offered to purchase Nairaland for a price of just $200 (N73,000). But the 'stubborn' administrator turned down the offer.
Guess how much its worth now?
Lesson learnt: Don't rush into selling your assets.
5. Took 8 years to get 1 million members:
Nairaland is no doubt the largest forum in Africa having her first million members after 8 years on January 18th, 2013 at exactly 2:30am Nigerian time.
Although this statistics might be distorted as more than 70% members have at least 2 different monikas due to bans from hyperactive mods.

6. 1.5k new members per day:
Nairaland has an estimated new registrations of 1,500 members/day. That is 45,000/month, 225,000 in 5 months and 540,000 in a year.
7. 41 forum sections:
Nairaland has a perceived total of 41 forum sections and 1 hidden section for Moderators ( Ina Caucus only ). We have also calculated an estimated 60 sub-sections. In total making it 100+1 forum sections in Nairaland, biggest in Africa for a reason.
8. 30 moderators:
Nairaland has an estimated value of 30 moderators with 5% currently inactive.
1 Super Super moderator - Seun
2 Super moderators - Mynd44 and lalasticlala
And the rest are normal moderators.
9. Nairaland was hacked!
Yeah that's right. Some unknown circumstances managed to put Nairaland offline for 2 days straight on June 24th 2014. But some people placed the blame on the management as Nairaland was not using a Secured Socket Layer certificate, even the then CMS <SMF> which was powering Nairaland had some vulnerabilities and the website's database wasn't update frequently.
This had the Admin roll back to a 5 months old Database which lead to loss of posts, threads, likes and monikas.
10. The first post on Nairaland was made on March 14th, 2005 by Admin and founder. Here
So there you have it. How many of these did you know?
