this is quite stunning so finally we can extract a very grudging acknowledgement from you. so why all the name calling and the so called unmasking.calling me a dog and all that. i really do not believe i deserved all that vitriol from you . perhaps when you reflect deeply on your conduct you might find it within yourself to show contrition. i won't hold my breath. |

aribisala0: Now acknowledged - Online (only). This is the process: New words come in (e.g. vuvuzela). Then, they get acknowledged in ODO (Oxford Dictionaries Online) Then, OED (Oxford English Dictionaries). Then, hardcover dictionaries. My hardcover dictionary (7th edition) doesn't have those words. Sorry. |

my understanding is you have previous form so no surprise there. i am not your first victim and won't be the last. but even obama has received greater challenges so you should take it easy. if respect means not challlenging your authority that is a peculiar form of respect. . i know i never once called you any names so you alone know what you mean by respect. you scroll right back and review all the names you called me. if you feel it was justified no worries. i still maintain that this is a rather brave undertaking for anyone and for you you will require more tolerance and restraint. |

Even now, "gateman" is still not on its own (but, this doesn't matter, though). Search for it and you will be redirected to the word "gatekeeper". http://oxforddictionaries.com/view/entry/m_en_gb0328670#m_en_gb0328670 And, other dictionaries (e.g. Longman) haven't acknowledged this word (gateman). http://www.ldoceonline.com/spellcheck/?q=gateman Ditto for "unserious": http://www.ldoceonline.com/spellcheck/?q=unserious But, Oxford dictionaries are my preferred ones. So, to me, they ARE NOW acknowledged. My ONLY offence is not checking for NEW UPDATES. |

fact remains that you have made several misleading assertions here. the way i see it the most important battle you need to win is with yourself. accept your errors with humility, apologise and move on. all this huffing and puffing impresses no one. what do you mean by crushed??-deploying abusive words like i-idiott and fool. you think not engaging you on that level is evidence of crushing no quite the opposite. i only indulged you so you reveal what you are really about.what you reveal is an insecure individual with profound internal struggles. if you are sincere here. focus on the purpose of the thread and stop all this vulgarity |

My apologies if any NLander finds some posts/comments on this thread unpalatable. At times, it's inevitable. Some people are just damn too uncouth and dissing it back is sometimes recommended. However, all NLanders are welcome. Come in, observe and contribute in a way that helps not in a way that hurts. This thread is a modern-day OJA OYINGBO. I don't give a damn! If you are not happy in here, kindly pack your duds and your clogs, GET OUT AND STAY STAY OUT. It is MY thread. This OP is answerable ONLY to the Mods, Mukina and Seun. Thank you. |
Re: ABC Of Common Errors And Mistakes In English by olaolabiy: 3:26am On Apr 19, 2011 |
Let's examine "humble" and "humbled". "Humble " is an ADJECTIVE. "Humbled" is a VERB. "I am humbled to have as my guest of . . . . . ." ^^Does this mean I am honoured? Nope! "Humbled" (VERB) means "to feel less important". "Humble" (ADJECTIVE), however, is "having/showing of modesty." Very different! Different meaning and usage! Reference: ^^^I 'stole' this from Seun |

@ Ola, are you implying that using "I'm humbled . . . " is not right? |
Re: ABC Of Common Errors And Mistakes In English by olaolabiy: 1:06pm On Apr 19, 2011 |
slap1: No, Slap1. It is right. It depends on the usage. And, I 'stole' it from Seun. He posted it and I was stunned. |
Re: ABC Of Common Errors And Mistakes In English by olaolabiy: 1:13pm On Apr 19, 2011 |
^^^I mean Seun's right. And, "I am humbled" is also right. It depends, buddy. |
