Born under a tree in a refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya, Aweng spent her formative years in isolation. Her mother was 16 when she had her, the first of 12 children. She and Aweng’s father had fled their home in Sudan as war broke out. An adventurous child, Aweng spent most of her time climbing trees and chasing chickens, which is how she got her scars. “We still laugh about it as a family,” she told Dazeddigital

She’s also known for her eyes, the whites of which change from grey to brown depending on what climate she’s in – a byproduct of a genetic condition that she was born with. “People tell me I look like a jaguar or that I’m ‘exotic’,” she laughs. “Sometimes I just want to shout at everyone: ‘Look at me, I’m not just a scar, I’m a human.’ But I get it, it’s a curiosity. I know I’m different, I know my facial features are different, but to me that’s beauty.”

“I’ll admit it, there’s a few moments that I’ve had, where I’d stare at the girl next to me and I would just wish that I could have her smile, or her skin, or her hair, or her thighs, or her eyes.” Aweng acknowledges this as just human nature. Embracing her own beauty may have taken some time, but finding that inner love is the reason she is currently a face to look out for on the modeling scene for years to come.

In the modeling industry, she encounters those who wish to mold her into something that she isn’t. Still, Aweng manages to remain inspired, even by the simplest of things. “The idea of one being born, one learning a new language, one discovering, just one breathing inspires me,” She says. “I am inspired daily by the idea that I was at first nothing. I was just a mere fetus. I developed, I grew.”

Aweng has been modeling for roughly four years and was discovered at sixteen years old in Sydney, Australia while working as a front cashier, at my local McDonald’s. She has also featured on numerous covers and has modelling for many major international brands including Fenty.
