I think I'm with Buhari on this. You need to see the way African presidents run to Beijing to lick the feet of Xi Jinping. It is a shameless thing to see over 50 clueless nations depend on a single nation for its development (in the name of bilateral relationships). This sham agreement seems like a Chinese sponsored deal. China is currently responsible for the construction of 99.9% of railways across the entire continent, from Kenya to Malawi, Congo, etc. By handling all railway projects, the goal is to connect all 52+ nations, and Xi will do aything to push Chinese products through these railways. They sell their goods, we get infrastructure that are bound to decay in no time. Of course, they know we can't maintain what we can't build.

Buhari must have learnt some lessons after the currency swap nonsense barely six months into his administration. I'm hoping he's not making another mistake with the ongoing Islamic deals. Buhari will most likely abandon his brain when religion becomes a part of the discussion.

With their population ranging from 10m to 50m, do you think they would choose our product over theirs?.. that would kill their manufacturing industries.

I am with Buhari on this. They need to first sort out xenophobia against innocent Nigerians first in Africa. No point being carried away by free trade agreement on paper while Nigerians will not be allowed to trade in peace. To go lose serious money when attacked. Or killed even.

Nigeria will just become a dumping ground for goods from outside Africa through African countries.

And Nigeria will equally have many countries to dump theirs too.

Our only fear is that we as people produce low quality goods that may not be accepted by many.

52 out of the continent’s 55 countries have signed the free trade agreement with the exception of Benin, Eritrea, and Nigeria due to concerns raised by local businesses. Nigeria’s failure to sign the agreement was due to concerns raised by its manufacturing association which says the AfCFTA would have a negative impact on its members.

Nigeria will regret this big time. There is so much to gain from being a partner to this agreement.

Although Nigeria is trying to safeguard its economy, but the sad truth is that the economy of this country is set for a decline since Neighboring countries are busy signing the agreement.

Its only a matter of time before Nigerian businesses move to other countries in Africa to establish their trade while our home economy suffer in the hands of misdirected leadership.

The ripple effect of these trade agreement on the African economy is huge and I believe its time for us to kiss industrialization goodbye.

Meanwhile, this GUARANTEES that when foreign investors are seeking out a "beach-head" or "gateway" to access the entire African market, they will NEVER even look at Nigeria at all...

Nope. Most countries out of fear will not allow Nigerians freehand to trade. Look at ECOWAS.

Our government is actually more senseless than you can ever imagine. The public show of bragggado will not save the sinking ship of the Nigerian state under the incompetent leadership of the APC.

The statusquo is still being maintained on the part of the government, nepotism is the order of the day while incompetence is established in every facet of the Nigerian state.

Verily I say unto you, the #10,000 being shared by the APC to market women will not save this economy from the imminent collapse.

What has any of these countries imported from our Manufacturers before to grant free trade access.
you are looking at one side only. It would have also expanded market for Nigerian businesses too

Benin isn't signing because they have the largest port in Africa...thus they will lose revenue

Nigeria isn't signing cos they are the main target... Chinese will take advantage of this by importing Chinese products to our neighbors and slamming 'made in Cameroon/Ghana/togo' on it
now is Nigerian economy bigger than the 52 countries that signed all together? Who is losing here ?

The pact aims to boost intra-African trade by making Africa a single market of 1.2 billion people and a cumulative GDP over $3.4 trillion. The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) estimates that the implementation of the agreement could increase intra-African trade by 52% by 2022 (compared with trade levels in 2010) and double the share of intra-African trade (currently around 13% of Africa’s exports) by the start of the next decade.

Because Buhari is taking instruction from myopic people who want to protect tbeir selfish interest instead of wider continental interest.

And those saying China, you don't know what you're talking about. China is already everywhere all over Africa and this agreement is to their interest. China would earnestly want this.

Britain controls your president and most of your elites, so look there and you'll find what interests they'll want to protect with a brain dead president in power.

just the other day immediately after inaugurating the president he jets off the next day for Islamic country meeting.

I'm not against Islam, but how will that benefit the nation. This agreement will benefit the nation and businesses and also the citizens. Now only Nigerians will require visas to go to some African countries for business

People are ignorant.

Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa,
Some of The largest manufacturers and will stand to gain the most if we join the agreement.

Our people are very innovative but Nigeria is a very very limited market. Allowing our manufacturers to sell to over 1.2 billion people is definitely better than just 200 million (estimated Nigerian population).

We are pass the opportunity of our lifetime.

Most of us already source foreign made goods in Europe, China and America. Just imagine if we brought all that money back to Africa? Africa is the hardest continent to trade in and we need to soften things up else we will remain perpetually poor!!

Other countries should be worried about us not the other way round. The decision to abstain from signing the agreement is to favor a very very few billionaire manufacturers in Nigeria whom do not want any competition or want to improve the quality of their product. Competition is good... no continent or country has ever flourished without the zeal to out do their competitors.

United States wouldn’t be United States if it wasn’t for WWII and the impending doom from Germany if they didn’t sit up.

Canada, Mexico and United States have free trade agreement and even though USA is the largest economy, it’s greatly benefitting... let’s participate and if it doesn’t make us richer in 10 years, let’s pull out.
