How much is a bag of rice in Benin and how much is it in Nigeria, the question is why is Nigerian govt making Nigerians to suffer unnecessarily. What's special about us. 1 Like |

Jmk9292:that is not the fact d problem is that things are too expensive in this country, lack of electricity and hi import duty is killing this country now dangote is complaining the same man selling a bag of low quality cement for over #2000 check other cement producing countries a bag of cement is not more than #700 now when they smugglers start smuggling quality cements tomorrow and selling at the cost of #1500 he will start crying look at rice today, a bag of foreign rice both transportation and normal duty is #6000 per bag, but our governors sold their own locally produced rice at #18000 a bag, are they not encouraging the smugglers? 3 Likes |

vhykeeytor: This is the most off topic quote I have come across. Even common sense should tell you that the most important area where goods come in and out of Nigeria is the south west not the the north. |

ckmayoca:I don't know why some of you can't seem to focus on the topic under discussion. Is the topic about northern borders and insecurity or about smuggled goods coming through the Nigeria-Benin border? You just want to keep hating and never reason. |

If not for Nigeria poverty would kill the entire citizenry of Benin, they practically feed off the Nigerisn economy. It's just unfortunate that our political leaders are more interested in stealing than governance. 1 Like |

Jmk9292: Intensifying border security just to stem smuggling is needless. If its for security reasons, then all well and good. the cost of intensifying border security can easily be saved by implementing sensible policies. drop the tariff on these items simple. let the normal duties be paid to Nigeria's customs. make clearing them from the ports seamless. All of those are easier to do in my opinion. 3 Likes |

dedonfranco: Our borders have been porous long before now. Things came to this level because we adopted archaic means for maintaining business. For instance. Check the international price for 50kg portland cement. you think if cement is light enough for easier carriage people would not have begun smuggling that into the country too? |

vhykeeytor:this makes ZERO sense Most smuggled goods are from Benin Niger is land locked so is Chad so the volume of smuggling from these countries are abysmally low, and which btw Niger uses Benin republic port which means dangote is still right Many of you need to put things in proper perspective |

Nukilia: I dont really know how we will do ourself with the FTA thingy, na den we go sit up. Cos if you make your country too hot/ hostile for investors, they'll just easily go to the next country and they can and will easily ship to come sell to your people. But what do we know anyways, I have not seen much forward thinking and planning towards meeting these oncoming challenges here. 1 Like |

grandstar:Reading between the lines, what Dangote is really complaining about is how Benin’s porous borders are undermining his monopolies. Of course, he doesn’t bother to mention how the very tariffs and import bans on which he grows fat create the incentives for the smuggling which undermine them, by making it a lot more profitable to bribe customs officials to let “banned” goods through. I am no fan of corruption in general, but speaking from a purely economic viewpoint, the rampant smuggling Dangote is moaning about is a net benefit for the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. If it wasn’t, there would have been no need for the trade restrictions in the first place, as there are no externalities here to consider. 3 Likes 2 Shares |
