How much is a bag of rice in Benin and how much is it in Nigeria, the question is why is Nigerian govt making Nigerians to suffer unnecessarily. What's special about us.

that is not the fact d problem is that things are too expensive in this country, lack of electricity and hi import duty is killing this country

now dangote is complaining the same man selling a bag of low quality cement for over #2000 check other cement producing countries a bag of cement is not more than #700
now when they smugglers start smuggling quality
cements tomorrow and selling at the cost of #1500 he will start crying

look at rice today, a bag of foreign rice both
transportation and normal duty is #6000 per bag, but our governors sold their own locally produced rice at #18000 a bag, are they not encouraging the smugglers?

But the smuggling in the northern part of Nigeria...from Niger and Chad is not killing business abi! Rubbish.

This is the most off topic quote I have come across.
Even common sense should tell you that the most important area where goods come in and out of Nigeria is the south west not the the north.

I don't know why some of you can't seem to focus on the topic under discussion.
Is the topic about northern borders and insecurity or about smuggled goods coming through the Nigeria-Benin border?

You just want to keep hating and never reason.

Just as no country can experience population growth if Dangote trucks and Peace Mass Transit are their only means of transportation.

Just saying...

That is where good policies comes in as i mentioned..... Good policies and strict implementation would take care of all those but unfortunately they dont care..... Dangote from all indications is protecting his own interest here.

If not for Nigeria poverty would kill the entire citizenry of Benin, they practically feed off the Nigerisn economy. It's just unfortunate that our political leaders are more interested in stealing than governance.

Intensifying border security just to stem smuggling is needless. If its for security reasons, then all well and good. the cost of intensifying border security can easily be saved by implementing sensible policies. drop the tariff on these items simple. let the normal duties be paid to Nigeria's customs. make clearing them from the ports seamless. All of those are easier to do in my opinion.

If u go there & see things for urself, u will cry for dis country. Wat dis Guy's are doing with bike, carrying fuel inside Benin & other things coming in. It's our porous border that's the issue.

Our borders have been porous long before now. Things came to this level because we adopted archaic means for maintaining business. For instance. Check the international price for 50kg portland cement. you think if cement is light enough for easier carriage people would not have begun smuggling that into the country too?

When a government refuses to beef up security around its borders, people will continue to take advantage of their porous borders; it is a source of income for them. That includes the northern borders through which murderers called fulani herdsmen with their kith and kin flood this country and cause mayhem. Some of them even possess our national ID cards and voters cards while some legitimate Southern citizens are unable to get theirs.

leave them o! let them be thinking Dangote was interested in National Development. A businessman's first loyalty is to profit not tribe, religion, nationalism etc. It is profit pure and simple

I have not verified, but I hear people smuggle fuel across the northern border to sell at markup in Sudan, Chad and co too.

Ok, is it only from Benin Republic that Goods are snuggled into Nigeria?

What of those that choose to import legally, do you know the hell they go through at Nigerian ports?

Abeg, Oga Dangote should yarn well. Nigeria is the problem here.

I was going to say this... thank God you eat me to it. People who chose to go the legal route mostly go through hell in order to clear their goods. some have to forfeit the items, some clear their goods with almost the same amount if not more than the original cost of those items including hipping. Now you are expecting them to just sit back and keep praying for change of situation when ordinary Benin right beside has a better system of sorting these issues out.

Nonsense

I would blame protectionism and lack of border control. I think what's mainly being smuggled is rice, vehicles and other items on import ban list. Nigerian smugglers sneak Petroleum in Benin Republic because fuel is more expensive there.

Nigeria could pressure Benin Republic on issue by threatening to close border again. Maybe more more joint opperations and patroling. The border situation is a serious issue that needs alot of attention. There's Drugs, weapons, smugglers, human trafficking and criminal gangs to worry about.

Is it now about how many products....smuggling is smuggling. Let's call it what it is. You can't be clamouring for them to shut seme boarder. While your brothers up north are having it easy with smuggling. Charity begins at home.
this makes ZERO sense

Most smuggled goods are from Benin
Niger is land locked so is Chad

so the volume of smuggling from these countries are abysmally low, and which btw Niger uses Benin republic port which means dangote is still right

Many of you need to put things in proper perspective

You haven't seen anything yet! When the FTA comes into force, then you'll know the adverse effect on local manufacturers

I dont really know how we will do ourself with the FTA thingy, na den we go sit up. Cos if you make your country too hot/ hostile for investors, they'll just easily go to the next country and they can and will easily ship to come sell to your people.

But what do we know anyways, I have not seen much forward thinking and planning towards meeting these oncoming challenges here.

Dangote is saying poo

What is killing manufacturing in Nigeria are the unnecessarily high cost of credit, poor infrastructure and the tendency of manufacturers here to focus on areas the country has no comparative.

Hong Kong has virtually no import duty on goods and for decades it was a powerhouse in manufacturing, exporting billions of dollars worth of good. The same with Singapore. Imports therefore isn't what's decimating Nigerian manufacturing.
Reading between the lines, what Dangote is really complaining about is how Benin’s porous borders are undermining his monopolies. Of course, he doesn’t bother to mention how the very tariffs and import bans on which he grows fat create the incentives for the smuggling which undermine them, by making it a lot more profitable to bribe customs officials to let “banned” goods through.

I am no fan of corruption in general, but speaking from a purely economic viewpoint, the rampant smuggling Dangote is moaning about is a net benefit for the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. If it wasn’t, there would have been no need for the trade restrictions in the first place, as there are no externalities here to consider.
