The Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, yesterday pardoned 20 inmates across various prisons in the state and as well converted to life imprisonment, the sentences of two convicts on death row.

The prisoners serving various jail terms were granted prerogative of mercy by the governor in the spirit of the inaugural commemoration of the nation’s new Democracy Day on June 12.

It was gathered that some of the inmates who received the governor’s mercy were already on the death row while others were serving between two to eight years jail sentence.

According to the Prisons Public Relations Officer in the State, Babatunde Ogundare, he said that the inmates were drawn from various prisons in the state which include: the Olokuta Prison in Akure as well as from the Owo and Ondo medium prisons.

While stating that the inmates were pardoned based on good conducts, Ogundare gave the names of those pardoned as: Olugbenga Ajayi; Daniel Henry; ldowu Josiah; Friday Peter; Timothy Baba; Dele Bassy; Ayodele Ojo; Omolewa Tayo; Bode Eniola and Afariogun Dotun.

Others include: Oluyide Gbenga; Afolabi Salau; Adebobola Adewale Rafiu; Olawale Oluseyi; Odeleye Sunday; Lateef Oladipupo; Heworabi Sunday; Segun Tanimowo; Gbodi Lanre and Adeogun Sunday.

He added that two inmates on death row, Henry Ugbogu who was remanded at the Olokuta Prisons since April 26, 2010, having been convicted for conspiracy and armed robbery as well as Shina Akinnola also convicted in July 7, 2017 and earlier sentenced to death, had their sentences changed to life imprisonment.

The Prisons spokesman maintained that the Comptroller of Prisons in the state, Barrister Suanu Kinane and the entire Prisons Service staff were grateful to the governor for the amnesty granted the inmates, adding that such magnanimity would further help in decongesting prisons in the state.
