Which democracy? You call buhari regime a democratic? Disobedience to court order, Islamization of Nigeria? Closing down media house. Is that ur definition of democracy? Guy or girl. Come to America and see democracy and a true separation of powers at work. . The beating he received and the long term imprisonment he endured is what led to the democracy you are now enjoying. Today, Abacha is looked down upon as a despot while MKO is celebrated as the hero of democracy. In years to come, June 12 will continue to be celebrated as democracy day by generations yet to be born in as much as Nigeria is still in existence while Abacha’s despotic memory will fade away. Truly, the evil/good that men does live after them. [/quote] |

splendour7: In summary- IBB took over Government from Buhari in 1985 and ruled as Miltary President for 8 years. Abacha was IBB’s Chief Of staff although Aikhomu was the second in command. In 1993 IBB arranged a return to civilian governance through political party election ( two party system SDP and NRC) . Abiola won the election under SDP. The election was cancelled by IBB. Then IBB resigned ( stepped aside ) and appointed a civilian interim government under Earnest Shonekan. The Shonekan Government was supposed to be transitional and was to organize a democratic election within 6 months. Shonekan’s interim government was very unpopular as it was not elected. Abacha who was the leading military officer at the time sacked Shoken and his government and took over as full military head of state. Avila and many Nigerians continued to agitate for Abiola’s mandate as the legitimate elected president. Finally Abiola declared himself President of Nigeria and was promptly arrested and jailed by Abacha the Military head of state. Remember that all this time IBB was in retirement at his home in Minna. No IBB again. On the 8th of June 1998 Abacha died mysteriously. There a need to appoint a new president. The military met hurriedly and appointed Abdussalami Abubakar as Head os State. Just one month after Abdussalami’s takeover he arranged for the release of Abiola and OBJ from prison ( remember that OBJ was also In prison courtesy Abacha - but that is another story). Abiola was released in the presence of international organizations with a high level American Government delegation to witness the event. This was now July 1998, as the ceremony for Abiola’s release was starting he (Abila) collapsed right there in front of the international delegation ( apparently after he drank a cup of tea). He died. Abdussalam Abubakar ruled the country for 9 months and then organized a democratic election. OBJ who was now a rehabilitated Ex prisoner was fielded by PDP as Presidential candite. He won the 1999 election and was sworn in as President on May 29 th 1999. I hope you have the time to read this very brief account of the events. 1 Like |

Earthquake3:Oga, what he meant was that in 1983 in this country, usage of the internet was not as popular or as widespread, as it is now. There was no GSM network in Nigeria, there was poor data transmission due to the analogue network infrastructure, while newspapers only existed in print form, without digital or online versions. Only very few institutions had access to computers in Nigeria. Members of the public had little access to such computers, and fewer still had any access to the internet. Can you compare use of the internet in 1983, to internet usage today in 2019, among the citizens of Nigeria? |
