The norms that all kids can study science is no longer popular like before. Discoveries have made us know that some kids acquire syndrome that may be genetic or may arise from interest. This discovery has also shown that some kids are naturally born a scientist.

In my quest for an answer, I have come to understand some things about this; to advise parents especially those in Africa that being a scientist is not a criterion for achievement.

Now comes the question. How do you know if a child is a natural born scientist? Though not certain in some cases but there are signs you will see that will make you guess right even though not 100%.

• When kids follow breaking news stories, they may feel more personally connected to science: this could be a very good sign to note. Parents should devote more time with their kids, to monitor what they listen to, the kind of T.V. stations they enjoy apart from the usual movies. And also, the interest they placed on each of these stations e.g. discovery channels, science fictions movies and so on.

• They don’t like lectures but seem to benefit from interactive teaching. Most science incline students don’t like lectures because they see it to be boring. They just want things to be done with already. Although they are good listeners, they love to interact about things in line with science and discoveries. This can also apply to kids growing up. Some of them derive interest in chatting about science books, listening attentively to matters about discoveries and so on.



• They’re full of questions, always experimenting to see how things work, and mesmerized by watching a tiny ant carrying a morsel of food: parents should always take note when their kids are the type that asks so many questions on daily basis. They want to know why some things are like “this” or “that”. Their questions may be frustrating though but, such kids love science more than you think. Some kids experiment on things they see and are ready to create something out of it. It always gives them the joy to create something unique that works out at the end of the day. These categories of kids will always follow these trends because it is part of them.

Other signs which one might attribute to the loving nature of sciences in kids are; going beyond the classroom, love playing games (Educational games is recommended), love to explore together. By loving to explore together, it means checking out books on subjects about animals or the weather that makes them curious. That is also a sure sign maybe.

Are they born scientist then?

Young children born scientist are competent and able to engage in learning across all four strands of scientific proficiency from the very beginning of their science education.

We started with a discussion of young kid’s knowledge of the natural world and the natural things in them. This knowledge can emerge as a consequence of a child’s everyday interests with the things they see in the world they live in as well as a result of the ways in which it affects life.

After all research on this topic, I now discover that “An international study of science achievement amongst 4th and 8th graders confirmed that Asian countries (e.g., Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan) are producing the best-prepared students (Bybee and Kennedy 2005).

While there may be several reasons for this, one might boil down to attitude: Asian cultures are more likely to endorse a flexible, effort-based theory of intelligence. And people who believe that intelligence is influenced by effort learn better and achieve more in school. Can this be a topic for another day?
