I am just hearing about this guy, Sadiq Onifade aka Wurld for the first time ever. When I asked why (since it seems he has been around for a while), the response was "he is not popular because his music is not gbe bodye and pangolo".

I'm not one to rave about Nigerian music because the musical scene is super saturated with trash, but this guy is good. I've gone through a couple of his songs and this one below is my favourite so far.

Listen (i shut my eyes though. I don't fancy all these videos where women are made to dance seductively)

My Verdict: You are as good as your acceptance. If he has been around and remains unpopular, then he isn't that good. He should therefore try his hands on other things.

Quite a flawed logic.

What you should be asking is the availability of target market. Wurlld's music is not something Nigerians fancy, it's a brand that only few can make it in, and it has nothing to do with their depth or quality, but everything to do with the fans and their taste, or lack thereof.

Artistes like Wurld, Santi, BOJ, Black Magic and Nonso Amadi are amazing, but they aren't appreciated in Nigeria. They are alternative artistes and it's a growing genre here, so, the market is still small, a lot of times, people just don't understand their style.

It is not just Pangolo, he is not original. I can hear a lot of foreign artists he copied, even to Wizkid come closer.

Asa, Lagbaja, Johnny Drille etc. do alternate music and people still love them.

If you will take the road less travel, better be sure.

there is no originality in music today, let me tell you now. Everyone samples everyone's style. Do you know how many artistes Drake has copied? Does that take away from his brilliance? Rema is inspired by Swae Lee, Patoranking is inspired by a host of reggae artistes, Banks W is a whole Ne-Yo copy, yet, he still gathered a following. Burna Boy is trying so hard to be Fela, but his fanbase is massive. So, it is obviously not a perceived lack of originality that is stopping Wurld.

An artiste cannot work in isolation, they need inspiration, and these may come through the works of other artistes. Johnny Drills's song, Papa, was inspired by Darey's Pray For Me and Luther Vandross' Dance With My Father. Did you notice?

If you had a vast reservoir of music, you would juxtapose different songs and find that nothing is original and all artistes have been inspired by one person or another.

You are funny. Drake operates in a totally different market. If he had tried to push his music in Canada, he would have suffered the same fate as Craig David.

The Nigerian music industry is still very young. To carve a niche you need to be original with your sound even while adopting certain things from the foreign market. Burna boy, I like that you mentioned him, his sound is so unique despite integrating Fela basics.

What about Wizkid? You can copy but your sound has to be original. When Johnny sang Papa does it sounds like him or Darey? That is his original sound. A lot of artists have made old songs new because of their sound, Pentatonix -Hallelujah and listen to the same song by Jeff Gutt on American idol.

Let me ask you, why do you think Afropop is big now? Because it sounds different, yet we know Wizkid and the rest copy but they own it, made it their own via their unique sound.

how many Canadian acts try to push their music in Canada? That obviously makes no sense, because USA is the hub of North American music, now, if Wurld was Ghanaian and trying to push his music in Nigeria, your analogy would make sense, but in this scenario, it doesn't. How many Canadian acts do you know, pushing music in Canada and making it anywhere? What brought Craig David to the talk? Is he Canadian?

When I heard Papa, Darey was the first artiste that came to mind and I didn't even have to think far because JD had full lyrics lifted right off of Pray For Me, the only thing different was his voice. There was thos dude that was on The Voice, his name escapes me now, but his music sounds exactly like Johnny Drille's, will you say he copied his style too?

If you don't understand Wurld's music, that's fine, but accusing him of sounding similar to foreign artistes is ridicilous. When I first heard Johnny Drille's Wait For Me, it felt like hearing another country song, I could name four country acts that sound similar, but when I heard Wurld, nobody came to me. Nobody.

Do you listen to country music? Cuz if you did, Johnny Drille would sound like a copycat to you.
