September 30, 2010 02:08AM The ongoing rail tracks rehabilitation by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) in Lagos District has run into a hitch as some sections have been submerged. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the newly-laid tracks at Agege, Yaba, and Ebute Meta areas had been washed off by flood caused by torrential rainfall. The ballast stones were washed off, while the tracks were also submerged by the rain water. Between Ebutte Meta and Iddo terminus, several sections were flooded while the Ebutte Meta railway crossing leading to Apapa Ports was also not spared by the flood. An official of the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), handlers of the project, who did not disclose his name, attributed the washing off of the tracks to lack of drains. “There should be a proper drainage network to divert the flood from the rail. We will soon start work on the drainage system,” he said. Lagos district manager of NRC, John Dottie, also agreed that the rehabilitation work was affected because of lack of drains. “Until a proper drainage network is provided, the problem will continue to recur,” he said. Is this not the same rail line that had served the purpose for years? If it is a new one - why didnt the engineer make provision for natural issues like rain water? What exactly is the point here? Why do these newspapers always carry reports and quotes someone without a name? and is it today that flooding has been the bane in Lagos during too much rain? Or just another opportunity to criticise the railway project as usual? Even too much flood disrupts rail system in the UK - what's new brother? |

@labiyemmy: Pls do not encourage shoddy engineering work. As a railway engineer with 14 years experience, I can tell you that the drainage system comes well before laying the tracks. There should have been catchpits and drain channels built to direct water. Whereas it is impossible to stop the rains, it is very possible to direct rain away from the track. |

MY point is that these are not new rail tracks - they are the same ones that had been there for long - and the picture is the centre of the road - is that where rail tracks are built? Just another mischevious write up. |

This rail line actually runs through the middle of certain roads. |

What is the intelligence in this report ? Hatitude:Maybe you should direct your anger to the construction company that built the rail way back in the days without planning adequate drainage system.anyways common sense should have informed you that what you suggested doesn't apply here since it is just rehabilitation. |
