I once told a friend that Nigerians do not like “freedom fighters” –people championing their cause. I was able to make this kind of conclusion after I saw the way they “rejected” Gani Fawehinmi (anti-establishment personified), who had devoted his entire life to their cause, at the polling booths during the 2003 Presidential election. This conviction was again reinforced when Omoyele Sowore, a social crusader who has been at the forefront of the struggle for a better Nigeria since he was a “youth”, was “rejected” in the last presidential election.

The Nigerian society is a metaphor –of hypocrisy for that matter. The same people yearning for change, are usually the first people to destroy someone who wants to make a change. Nigerians hate freedom fighters, yes! They hate those who speak truth to power. With this kind of custom, Nigeria may not be worth fighting for especially when it is certain that the same people that one is fighting for will later go the way of Brutus.
