The police arrested a Nigerian national, who had been illegally staying in the city since 2008, on Tuesday at Neelankarai. The bureau of immigration officials detained the Nigerian, Daniel Ochia, 30, when he approached them to get an exit visa to leave India.

According to the police, Ochia had come to Chennai on a six-month visa in November 2008 and stayed with his friend in Vettuvankeni. Ochia was planning to enter into crude oil business with his friends. But he failed to renew the visa in April 2009 after it expired.

When the business venture with his friends failed to take off, Ochia planned to leave India. He approached the immigration officials at Sastri Bhavan and sought an exit visa. When the officials scrutinised his documents, they found Ochia's visa had expired and he was illegally staying in the city. The officials handed over Ochia to the Neelankarai police.

Based on the complaint of Marcos, assistant director of the bureau of immigration, the police registered a case and arrested Ochia. He was produced before a magistrate court in Alandur and remanded in judicial custody. The police is now probing how managed to overstay and his activities during the period.
