The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) currently going on in Egypt will enter the elimination round in a matter of days. Already, Morocco, Egypt, Uganda, Madagascar, Nigeria, Algeria, Senegal, Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon have booked their place in the second round of the competition after some wonderful display in the group stage.

Importantly, of all the teams mentioned above, the Maghreb or North African teams (Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt) look more likely to produce the winner of the tournament. This has nothing to do with the fact that the AFCON is hosted in Egypt –located in the Maghreb– even though the home advantage is a sine qua non, but because they have played better than any other African team participating in the tourney.
