Wonders shall never end.

U can get some cheap drones around.I bought a Chinese Husban X4 Quadcopter drone at ebay for $563 last year.
Has 4 control channels n a remote control freq of 7.8GHz with an altitude mode(up,down, left, right, forward, backward)and a hovering feature and remote distance of about 800M and -Flight time of 20 minutes.
It's used to monitor truant students in a boarding school.I gez the armies own shud be more than 10km min travel

I believe that’s some bullshit stories. I believe those drones are not meant for the purpose they are been used for. Those are DJI phantom 4 drones used for basically commercial film production / photography and not for real time security surveillance. Flight time for those drones are probably 25 to 35mims tops and altitude is about 500 to 1000 meters. Please get a combat drone system and not some toys. Naija dey fall hand sha o.

A civilian drone can fly at about 80 km/hr.
For a flight time of 30 minutes, the drone can only fly for 15 minutes if return time is included to avoid crash.
Let us even ignore that more power will be consumed for forest surveillance maneuvring.

So a normal drone that the military deployed can only fly for 20-40 meters before it loses its power.
Now, how effective do you think such a range will be for forest surveillance?

Wisdom58:
The 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Akure says it has raided no fewer than 18 camps of suspected kidnappers in the last one month with the help of its newly acquired drones.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the brigade launched two drones on June 21 to fight kidnappings and other related crimes in Ondo and Ekiti states.

Brig.-Gen. Zakari Abubakar, the Commander of the brigade, made this known while speaking with NAN on Tuesday in Akure.

He said: “On my assumption of office on March 28, 2019, I discovered that cases of kidnapping, robbery, herders and farmers clashes and others were on the increase in Ondo and Ekiti States.

“I discovered that one of the advantages the criminals have is the thick forests that abound in the two states.

“We first established an anti-kidnapp squad which recorded a lot of success. But anytime the kidnappers took their victims to the thick forests, it became very difficult to comb the area.

“There is no way we can perform effectively without the help of technology because the two states have thick forests which the criminals are using as their hideouts.

“So, the drones have helped us tremendously in our operations within one month that we launched it in the two states.

“As at now, 18 different camps had been raided and the arrested suspects had been handed over to the police and other security agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.”

Abubakar, who attributed the success of the operations to the support of the duo of Lt.- Gen. Tukur Burata, the Chief of Army Staff, and Maj.-Gen. Okwudili Azinta, GOC, 2 Division, Ibadan, said the army was ready to make Ondo and Ekiti free of crimes.

The brigade commander also said that the cooperation of other security agencies had aided the arrest of kidnappers.

“We know that there is no where they can hide with the technology we are using now and  their days are numbered.

“The only thing that we need is the cooperation of the media and politicians to support the army’s vision and goals,” he said.

What's the need announcing it to the public, those kidnappers will now up their game, they will research on how Taliban evade drones in Afghanistan and rub themselves with mud during night time.

Drones that can be hijacked, shot down......

When the NA acquire an MQ-9 Reaper I will take them serious.

Meanwhile

In the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Israel used unarmed U.S. Ryan Firebee target drones to spur Egypt into firing its entire arsenal of anti-aircraft missiles. This mission was accomplished with no injuries to Israeli pilots, who soon exploited the depleted Egyptian defenses. In the late 1970s and 80s, Israel developed the Scout and the Pioneer, which represented a shift toward the lighter, glider-type model of UAV in use today. Israel pioneered the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for real-time surveillance, electronic warfare, and decoys.[9][10][11] The images and radar decoying provided by these UAVs helped Israel to completely neutralize the Syrian air defenses in Operation Mole Cricket 19 at the start of the 1982 Lebanon War, resulting in no pilots downed.[12]

In the late 1980s, Iran deployed a drone armed with six RPG-7 rounds in the Iran–Iraq War.[13]

Impressed by Israel's success, the US quickly acquired a number of UAVs, and its Hunter and Pioneer systems are direct derivatives of Israeli models. The first 'UAV war' was the first Gulf War: according to a May 1991 Department of the Navy report: "At least one UAV was airborne at all times during Desert Storm." After the Gulf War successfully demonstrated their utility, global militaries invested widely in the domestic development of combat UAVs.[14] The first "kill" by an American UAV was on October 7, 2001 in Kandahar.[15]

In recent years, the U.S. has increased its use of drone strikes against targets in foreign countries and elsewhere as part of the War on Terror. In January 2014, it was estimated that 2,400 people have died from U.S. drone strikes in five years.[16] In June 2015 the total death toll of U.S. drone strikes was estimated to exceed 6,000.[17]
