A secondary school building has collapsed in the Rumubiakani area of Port Harcourt.

The 2-storey structure belonging to Immanuel Comprehensive College collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday.

It is unclear if anyone was hurt or trapped under the rubble but people living in the area said they ran out when debris began falling on their roofs.

Emmanuel Ine, a resident of the area told newsmen that the building collapsed around 2 am on Wednesday morning.

“It was when the debris started falling on our roofs that we began evacuating to safety. I woke up everyone and we ran out” he said.

An official of the Rivers State ministry of urban and physical development said that the ministry is investigating the collapse.

Officials of the school refused to comment when contacted but residents said they saw the building tilting towards a side and after 45 minutes, it collapsed.

They said the building was old but could not give the exact year it was built.

An inquiry into the documents of the building from the ministry of urban development was not immediately complied with.

An eyewitness simply identified as Peter told our correspondent that the collapse sounded like an earthquake.

He said that vibration from the building woke them up.

He said that the Wednesday collapse was not the first time the school building was collapsing as another 4-storey structure belonging to the school collapsed in 2016.

PH is at a riverine area just like most parts of Lagos. Storey buildings are not supposed to be built on swamps, but they will get an approval for a bungalow and build storey buildings which are too heavy for the land.
Glass houses only are approved for storey buildings on swamps. Some will just even convert a bungalow into a story building.

Why won't building collapse in Nigeria? Any mason who claims he can peg and sign foundation automatically starts answering Engineer

In Nigeria, People look at cost instead of Quality.

It's only in Rivers State, you see Ikwerre men gathered with a small stick drawing some lines on the ground, and the next day foundation has been dug, and laying of blocks started. Consult a trained civil or building engineer, they won't.

That's how they told Sasun Hotel owner not to add more floors on that collapsed 7 stories at GRA, and he refused.

Well, get well soon to the injured, since no one died.
