The Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Command, has arrested two young men who allegedly robbed a driver, Afred Moses, working with car hiring service provider Bolt (formally known as Taxify). The suspects reportedly attacked the driver in his Toyota Corolla car along Lekki-Epe Expressway.

According to reports, the suspects, Edwin Adache (31) and Daniel Abah (27) fronted as genuine passengers and boarded the taxi along Lekki–Epe Expressway in the guise of going to Ibeju Lekki, both in Lagos. On the way to their destination, they disclosed their true identify as robbers to the driver, and ordered him to park his car, threatening to kill him if he failed to cooperate. The driver continued driving, until one of them grabbed him by the neck while the other one poured patrol on his face. At that point, the driver was forced to stop the car. Having overpowered him, the two men took him out, and made away with the car.

Surprising confession by robbers

Information made available by the Police explains that the suspects confessed to committing the crime. They claimed they wanted to sell the car to raise capital for a business venture. The suspects also disclosed that, but for the driver’s stubbornness, they would not have poured patrol on his face. It was just a tactic to overpower him to let go of the car.

Both suspects have been charged to an Igbosere Magistrate Court on a three-count robbery charge.

Counsel to the Police, Reuben Solomon, informed the court that the suspects pretended to be passengers to gain access into the driver’s car, only to rob him of his car and phone afterwards, before fleeing. According to the counsel, the actions of the suspects were criminal and punishable in line with sections 287 (10), 411and 329 as contained in the Lagos State Criminal Law 2015.

The suspects pleaded not guilty before the court. They were granted bail by the presiding Magistrate S. Sasanya for N200,000 per individual with two sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned by the Magistrate till July, 19, 2019. In the meantime, the suspects were to be kept at Ikoyi Prisons until they met the conditions for bail.
