Despite the large number of universities in Nigeria, no single one of them is mentioned among the top 1000 in the world by Webometrics Ranking of World University. The Nigerian government has not helped matters at all in this regard with their regularly low budget allocation to the educational sector annually thereby crippling the infrastructural growth of the institutions and indeed the welfare of staff who as a result embark on incessant strike action every now and then. All of these have culminated to most of our universities becoming production factories for half-baked graduates and educated illiterates who are unable to justify the qualifications bestowed on them.
Government can only address this situation by seriously embarking on massive investments in education just like in the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. During these periods, universities in this country used to rank alongside any standard university anywhere in the world. You could walk into any of the campuses and see the array of dedicated and committed academics and researchers from across the world, milling around and pursuing their varied interests in science, medicine, arts, social science and humanities.
Unfortunately most of these same campuses are now shadows of their former selves. Meanwhile many more universities have since been established and it is the duty of the National University Commission (NUC) to approve and register each and every one of them provided they meet up with the required standards. So far so good, the commission now has a current list of about 43 Federal universities, 48 State universities and 79 Private universities- 170 universities in total.
However the executive secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, recently clarified that the commission has not done any ranking exercise or ranked any university in Nigeria in the past 14years as against the purported ranking that is making the rounds on social media, some of which had been attributed to the commission. Without yielding to sentiments, which of the universities would you rather pick as the top 10 in the country and as such best recommended to students?
