Condoms are designed to protect you from contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) from an infected partner. However, there are some STDs that can still be transmitted even with a protective barrier like condom during intercourse. STDs that are spread by skin-to-skin contact can still be spread even with the use of a condom during sex. This can happen when an STD is exposed to infected parts of the partner’s body that the condom did not cover.

The use of condoms is mainly to act as a protective barrier to STDs present in bodily fluids like semen, vaginal fluids and blood by either containing the fluids if the individual wearing the condom is infected, or protecting the individual who is wearing the condom from a partner who is infected. This is applicable to both male and female condom.

Natural condoms like those produced from lambskin are unsafe for preventing STDs. Though their pores cannot allow the passage of sperm cells, but they allow the passage of bacteria and viruses.

STDs You Can Get While Wearing A Condom

STDs that cannot be prevented even with the use of a condom include:

HPV (human papillomavirus)

This is the most common STI, it has over 100 strains of the virus. Some strains of HPV go unnoticed and may cause no symptoms, while others can cause genital warts or various cancers. Genital warts can appear on parts of the genitals that are not covered by a condom, this makes it easy for HPV to be spread by skin-to-skin contact. There is no known test for male HPV, this makes it easier for infected males to unknowingly transfer HPV to their sexual partners.

Genital herpes

Genital herpes is a viral STD that causes the appearance of sores or lesions on the anus, genitals, or upper thighs. A case of either HSV-1 or HSV-2 is called genital herpes when it affects the genitals or the surrounding area. Herpes that appear on body parts not protected by condom can be passed on to another partner during sex.

Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection that spreads during vaginal, oral, and anal sex. Syphilis sores occur at the infection site, and can be passed on by a partner through skin-to-skin contact irrespective of condom use.

Pubic Lice/Crabs[/b]

Pubic lice, also called crabs, are Pthirus pubis that infect the genitals. These lice are commonly spread during sexual or skin-to-skin contact. Pubic lice lives in pubic hair and can spread with or without the use of a condom.
