FORMER governor of Kaduna State, Balarabe Musa, has commended the court judgment in favour of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) gubernatorial candidate in Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

He said the verdict was a welcome development in the country’s democracy and it has also shown that the judiciary could be relied on.

According to him, “Fayemi’s victory in Ekiti was a welcome development. In spite of the power and influence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), it is still magnanimous enough to respect rule of law and the wish of the people. But that is not to say that judgment has been done. PDP is too much entrenched in the system, it is controlling absolute majority from the centre to the local level all over the country.

“What PDP did on Friday in Ekiti was like parting with a minute out of the more than enormous in its capacity. We do rejoice but our system needs total overhauling that will translate to equal representation of all the parties.”

Musa noted that the hope of the country now lies in the integrity and credibility of INEC chairman, Attairu Jega towards conducting free, fair and credible election in 2011. “I am happy,” Musa informed, “that the judiciary once more demonstrated great commitment and courage while PDP accepted its fate and truth in Ekiti, but there is still need for more justice in the country.”

The ACN gubernatorial candidate of Osun State, Rauf Aregesola, also saluted the courage and uprightness of the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel of Appeal Court justices, and indeed, the Judiciary, for dispensing justice, without fear or favour. By this Judgment, he added, “our faith has been rekindled in the capacity of the Judiciary to ensure that justice is done.”

“We share this auspicious moment of joy with our brother, Dr. Fayemi, as we congratulate him for his dogged fight to claim his mandate. With this victory, let our people know that a true, popular, democratic and humane administration is born which will revive the passion of our people for freedom and good life,” Aregbesola said.

Niyi Raheem, a former ACN gubernatorial candidate in Lagos, said the verdict was “victory at last”.

The national chairman, National Transformation Party (NTP), Mr. Emmanuel Mok, said the verdict in favour of Fayemi once again revealed the rot in the country’s democracy and the disregard for the electoral power and wish of the people
