A group of hunters have butchered 23 pilot whales as part of a centuries-old tradition off the coast of the Faroe Islands.

The hunt, known locally as a 'grind,' takes place to feed the inhabitants of the remote Atlantic archipelago during winter.

Environmental charity, Sea Shepherd, documented the killing on Friday in the bay of Hvalvik, a village on the island of Streymoy.

Despite calls for the hunt to end, the Faroese insist that it is sustainable and regulated by law.

In September 2018, Sea Shepherd even offered the islanders one million Euros for 10 consecutive years with no whale hunts.

The charity said it is the 10th whale hunt on the islands this year, with 536 pilot whales slaughtered in total.

The Faroese say they respect the whales and aim to kill them as humanely as possible. Campaigners present said that the method was brutal, with spears missing the kill and causing additional distress

Another criticism from the Sea Shepherd charity was that the grind had been made into a social event with children and tourists photographing the slaughter

'Though, as usual, the 'humane' process of killing the pilot whales was far from it, with multiple unsuccessful attempts to paralyse them with the lance were observed on a number of the pod'

The men can be seen traipsing the pilot whales through the blood stained sea. The whale meat and blubber will be used to feed the population of the islands and is a tradition that has lasted for centuries

A charity spokesman said: 'Grind participants ran cheering into the pod to start attaching ropes and pulling individuals out to begin slaughtering'

The charity reported the 'harrowing' sights of a small foetus and a calf almost ready to be born, being removed from their mothers

The islanders cut away at the meat and blubber of the whales in order to feed themselves during winter. Despite complaints from environmental charities, they say the whales are treated humanely and that the hunt is legal
