Nollywood Need To Study filmmaking and production by RSAMAN(m): 5:21pm On Oct 18, 2010 |
nollywood actors and the rest of the crew should go study filmmaking, i'm sick of the pile of crap i see at every corner of every street in my town. what nollywood is doing is trying to discover everything that is already been discovered, you don't have to discover what is already been discovered but you have to study it and once you have, then you can proceed to discover new things. example: If you wanted to be a tv set manufacturer, that doesn't mean you have to start from discovering how the first tv set was made, otherwise you'd be living in the 1910s and you would take about 100 years to get to how tv is today. One word to nollywood is: STUDY! |

@OP: I agree. In terms of quality, I'd say that Nollywood is years behind from the acting skills of the actors/actresses to the production and execution of the actual films. It id often times of poor quality. I can't help but laugh at times when I see certain movies or actors/actresses. I'm not saying that they need to copy their western counterparts but they need to have and set some sort of standards when it comes to the execution of these movies. I remember once when I was at school and someone in my chemistry lab class mentioned something to the professor about Nigerian movies and the professor asked what Nigerian movies where and the whole class started laughing. At first it may seemed like they were laughing at the professor for not knowing what it was but after a few minutes you'd quickly come to realized that it was the quality of the movies the movies/quality of the acting that they were laughing at. She asked them why they were all laughing and everyone pretty much said the same thing. They told her the reason they were laughing was because the movies were of poor quality, had exaggerated titles, make up, clothes, and story lines, and that the acting skills weren't up to par and that the fact that she has yet to see these movies and how bad some of the movies were seemed to make them laugh even more. |

Hollywood makes a lot of crap too. I'd say only a fraction of movies they churn each year hit the mark for me. And hey Nollywood has a few decent movies from the hip they produce each year. The major difference is hollywoood has a sustainable business model that makes it able to attract top dollar and hence the quality shows. |
Re: Nollywood Need To Study filmmaking and production by Nobody: 3:18pm On Oct 25, 2010 |
hahaha, PEOPLE, if you think nollywood isnt doing well or that they are shit, why not u go in and do ur own production/filming etc.nollywood is not like nigerian politics u will not get dirty if u enter, also there are no barriers to entry, so rather than sit on ur couch and become the armchair specialist.why not go out there and put in the hardwork because i can tell u these nollywood guys are actually working hard and millions are made/millions are making a livin/surviving through it since our government is inept.nollywood can be improved with effective good government bringing incentives to increase investment. by solving the piracy problem, or is it private individuals that will solve crime too like we solve every thing else(borehole, generator, etc). i do not watch naija movies alot but i am very proud when my freinds and foreign media especially in africa are very positive about nigerian films, although some cant stand nigeria/ans themselves. NOLLYWOOD AS IT IS NOW IS JUST ABOUT THE FEW GOOD THINGS(top 5) THAT HAS COME OUT OF NIGERIA IN THE PAST 50 YEARS, and that is no hype |

Why not start a movie school? I support Nollywood, for an industry that produces with the kind of resources we have it is highly commendable that people even show up to make movies. Yes there is too much unprofessionalism but then its an area waiting for innovation. |

Like with everthing else, Nigerians film directors fail to appreciate the importance of departmental delegation and collaboration. You cant make a film with only the director trying to controll every aspect of it! It can be argued that Film making is an industry that leans heavy on collaboration between departments. I studied Cinematography as a hobby, and was amazed at how many departments had to collaborate and function cohesively just to produce a film. There is the Sound department, the lighting department, the logistic department, Location scouting, visual effects, Grips, Gaffer, bestboy, Focus puller, assistant director, director, directory of photography, 1st and second camera assistant, costume department, make up and hair, catering, continuity director, Personal assistant, finance department, Set design, Illustration department, Stand ins, Actors, extras,Safety department. Film processing and developing department, editor e.t.c Some one has to start up a film company with a holistic picture of what it entails, and then start training people to man the various departments. This will definitely improve the quality of Nigerian films. Also government has to enforce stricter piracy and copy right laws, so film companies can recouporate their profits. |

Nollywood movies including Yoruba movies are quick, dirty & low budget production or wuru wuru to the answer. (Short cut) ;DWhat can you say? Still, I find them very funny and entertaining. I think if you make it too refined or too polished you may take away some of the entertainment value. In the end, movies are there to entertain not to test my level of intellect. I’m not a movie critic so I always look beyond the flaws in these movies and just enjoy it If you can’t compete with Hollywood, better find a model that works and is well appreciated by your audience. The average film costs US$25,000 (NGN 3.7 miilion) to produce and can sell up to 100,000 units in Nigeria; @N150 per DVD. Do the math and you'll understand why they keep churning out this types of "home movies" I’ve seen countless on Youtube on my way home from work; helps kill time on the train. BTW, why are people uploading them to Youtube? I’ve always been curious about this. |

Afternoon ladies and gents, I can't agree more about the current nature and state of our Film industry, and the need for change. I so much believe in this change that I and a couple of my friends/colleagues (we are all from different countries - Nigeria, Ghana and South-Africa) have given ourselves the task of advocating and bringing this change. Beginning next year, there will be a revolution for the film making industry. I and my colleagues left the shores of Nigeria and went to the Uk and USA to study film production, directing and animation all the way. This year we have been doing some test runs (but won't be releasing anything yet, until we are satisfied with our perfect production, as "you do not need or have a second chance to make a first impression" while taking a look at our own film industry to see how we can integrate what we have learned and make that change. We tried coming home every Christmas to see how things are going at home, and so that we will still keep ourselves present/up to date of the reality, and that has helped with our planning. I and my colleagues will be coming home finally end of this year, and we will be having massive auditions nationwide, and not only in Nigeria, but also in Ghana, and possibly South Africa; we intend to screen the populace and pick those with REAL talent (and also potential, which we will help them build upon); with the completion of this mammoth task which we have dealt ourselves, we will birth a new film industry (and it will not be called nollywood - I personally dont like that word which is just a derivation of hollywood. we usually ask ourselves time and again why nollywood [and also ghollywood] was chosen just to make it sound like hollywood when there are a lot of other names more indigenous to the country that could have been chosen). With that said, mark this as a minimal advertisement of what is to come. We know that it will not be easy, and it will definitely cost us a lot as well as cost you - the people (nothing good comes cheap, so if we want change we have to be willing to pay a price for it), but with the help of our fellow country people, we should be able to achieve the goal in due time. Please pass on the word to your friends and colleagues, families and loved ones, and even to your enemies to prepare for this massive audition and employment opportunity, come December 2010/January 2011. We know that a lot of people may want to travel to their homes/villages for the festive season, which is the reason why we are considering holding auditions and interviews up until January. We will keep you updated with information as the time draws closer. To those who dumped/stopped watching movies from our film industry, don't worry, I personally make you this promise, come next year, you will start watching movies made in our film industry - the new film industry. Let us bring the change we need! We will bring that change we need! Thanks. |

To Hilli66 above:- You are correct. You touched on the very salient points. If I may ask, what are your plans for the future (I noticed you said you did the cinematography just as a hobby, yet you are quite informed). If you are in the US (maybe I can contact you here), will you be going to Nigeria too this December and Any chance I can get you on a team of ours? Thanks. |

Fhemmmy: Yes, that plus some of the scenes are too long. Humans have a very short attention span: 9 minutes or so. Sometimes they stay on the same scene for so long that I lose interest and off it lol. Also, why haven't they learned how to omit background noise? Sometimes I can't hear word from the actors and actresses; all I hear is okada and damfo. I learned how to do that one in Media Productions during high school. It's not rocket science. Background noise should be gone by now. |

Re: Nollywood Need To Study filmmaking and production by mensdept: 12:17am On Oct 26, 2010 |
I watched a Naija movie yesterday that prop was shot/originally produced in 2001, featuring many old time actors (End Time). From the location to acting, to wardrobe, you can see that Nigeria (as usual) has had the potential to go far. Yet after that movie, I watched two other films (Ghanain and Naija) made prob earlier this year, and yes, crappy. In 10 years we have gone backwards in film quality, acting, and can only do drama movies. Ghana on the other hand with the 10 or so actors they have are producing and acting a bit better, but the vulgar language and copy copy of American slang is silly. Everything is not about tryin to make money at the expense of the larger picture. |
Re: Nollywood Need To Study filmmaking and production by kabukabu50(m): 12:25am On Oct 26, 2010 |
Who still watches Naija movies, ?? Last one I saw was years ago and they haven't changed since, terrible acting, rushed movies, they have to go beyond the realm of every movie involing family spats between a couple, corrupt politicians, sorcery and black magic. hollywood has genres all seperated, naija films must have it all in one movie .Its a drama, comedy, thriller, action, horror, sci fi all in one. |
