Omoyele Sowore is a Nigerian human rights activist, pro-democracy campaigner and founder of the top online news agency Sahara Reporters.

He was one of the contestants in the 2019 Nigerian presidential election and emerged 10th position with 33,953 votes ahead of other new entrants to the race like Fela Durotoye of the ANN, who polled 16,779, and Kingsley Moghalu YPP, who garnered 21,886 votes.

Omoyele Sowore was born on the 16th of February, 1971 in Ese-Odo, Ondo State in South West Nigeria into a polygamous home with sixteen children. He had his early education at the state and then proceeded to the Lagos State University (LASU) to pursue a degree in Geology.

Education

His academic program at LASU was extended by two extra years after being expelled twice for student activism and other political reasons. Sowore was the LASU Student Union Government (SUG) president between 1992 and 1994. During his time as SUG president, he was keenly involved in anti-corruption and anti-cultism. Omoyele Sowore holds a Master degree in Public Administration from Columbia University.

Career

Omoyele Sowore’s goal for starting the Sahara Reporters was to fight against corrupt and wrong government practices. He started the online news agency in 2006, in a small room in Manhattan, New York.

As part of Sowore’s policy, Sahara Reporters doesn’t accept financial support from the Nigerian government. The news agency is supported by grants donated by the Omidyar Foundation and Ford Foundation.

Activism

Omoyele Sowore in 1989 took part in student demonstrations protesting the conditions of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) $120 million loan to be used for a Nigerian oil pipeline. One of the conditions for IMF loan was the reduction of the number of universities in Nigeria from 28 to 5.

In 1992, Sowore led more than 5,000 students in a protest against the Nigerian government and the protest led to the death of 7 people. He was arrested and tortured by the Nigerian military.

Omoyele Sowore was also involved in the demand for democratic government taking over military rule in June 12, 1993. This also resulted into several arrests and life threatening treatments by government officials.

In 2019, Omoyele Sowore announced one of the biggest revolution to happen in the country on the 5-08-2019 in Lagos and Abuja. The revolution movement was named;
#RevolutionNow and its major aim is to stage the biggest protest in removing the government of the day base on their corrupt practices. Sowore was however arrested on the 2nd of August, few days to the protest by the DSS.
