With the introduction of Android’s latest version 8.0 Oreo, it opened the possibility of custom themes. People all over the world were elated to know that the possibility of customised themes could make their way to Android devices. The Android 8.0 Oreo added native support and command-line interface for Sony’s OMS Theme Framework. Although Google tried to restrict the access to the custom overlays in the Android Pie, it was so because this feature was not directly intended for the users.

Android Q Beta 2 Pixel theme for Google Pixel devices for customization

Before the Android Q Beta 2, Pixel theme for Google Pixel devices was first launched, there were speculations that Google would make use of overlays to let the users customise the font, icon colour, and also icon shape. Although, it will be only to a certain extent. Upon the launch of the very first Android Q Beta, it was evident that the feature of basic theming was available to the users. They could go to the setting through the Developer Options to carry out the customisation.

Customized themes on Android devices

On the contrary, now concrete evidence is available to ascertain that Google is developing an app solely dedicated to theming, called “Pixel Themes.” From the very first glance at a Google Pixel 3 XL, you will find a new app by the name of “PixelsThemesStub.” Since it is just a stub, there is not much to show or do about it. For the ones who are unaware, a stub is basically an empty APK that comes pre-installed and can be updated later on. As there is no activity to launch, there is not much that can be demonstrated.

However, the name of the package is com.google.android.apps.customisation.pixel. You will be able to easily find out the Pixel Themes app, as and when it goes live on the play store. Although, it is essential to note that the Pixel Themes app is not entirely empty. It contains assets that highlight the key ideas as to the previews of each of the custom themes.

It is evident that there will be three major custom themes, by the names of “Anthony”, “Johanna”, and lastly “Reiko”. With each theme, the user gets the option to change the icon shape, the font, and also the accent colour.

Each theme contains:
Anthony: The theme Anthony predominantly marks by black accent colour. Apart from that, it has Rubik font and rounded or squircle icons.
Johanna: Johanna identifies with green accent colour, along with Avro and Lato font, and full icons.
Reiko: Reiko is slightly different and has a purple accent colour. Along with it, it characterises by Arbutus font and circular or teardrop icons.
A user can also change the shape of the icon. A user can do it by going in Settings, and then system UI and then the Android Frameworks. New overlays, from product overlay, can be used to do the same. Lastly, APK also includes four wallpapers. Although they carry some peculiar resolutions, these four wallpapers are very basic and do not give much to dwell upon.

To conclude
Android Q tag keeps the users updated about the latest and new Android releases. For now, the users can install the second Android Q Beta 2 Pixel Theme for Google Pixel devices app on the Google Pixel phone. They can even use the Project Treble-compatible device. However, the Pixel Themes App will be out in the market very soon and help the users customise their Google Pixel phones, by changing the accents, fonts, and colours.
